I am sooooo proud of you, Amyjo!!! And it is true...once you read Lonsdale's book and find out about the peridontal disease etc., there is just no going back to kibble! After that no or limited vacc's just seem to follow, because they are so harmful too. From what I read about Bordatella, there are so many strains too, that getting the vaccine doesn't insure they will not get it, plus the vaccine weakens the immune system too. All the raw fed, no vacc's dogs I have read about that contracted bordatella shook it off in hrs. or a couple of days as comparred to vaccinated dogs who contracted it and it took a couple weeks for them to get over it, but ultimately it is your decision. Plus, it's easy for me to say because I don't board my dogs. I am a *complete freak* about it (as you all know), but I am really working on not preaching to other's about it too, but it is soooooo hard not to do when you see the benefit's like Amyjo mentioned about her 12 yr. old Elvis and the changes in him. Those are the types of changes I have seen in my old dog, too, and it's so hard not to get excited about it and wanting everyone to experience what you are experiencing, and not wanting your younger dogs to have to go through the *ell ours did before we switched!

Okay, Okay!! What is the name of the darn book and where do I get it. ;D Loey you are absolutely right about the numerous Bordatella strains. There are so many that the chances that the vaccine will protect against what is present in the kennel are slim to none. But they won't board a dog without it. I don't board anymore but the few times that I did they made me give the intranasal. They gave it on the day of boarding which is completely silly because the antibodies don't even start to build until a week later... Shows how much they don't know. And to top it off, this was boarding at the vet.

I have only recently in the last couple of years started boarding my dogs - My dog sitter graduated from college and moved away!
Anyway I found this awesome woman who takes really good care and plays with them and had a kiddie pool and does paw print art projects with them.... You can just tell she is a REAL dog lover.
The first time I left them I had to write one page descriptions on each of them...behavior, quirks, likes, dislikes, commands and tricks they know...She really tries to make them feel at home.
She makes sure they get individual attention and doesn't mix dogs if they aren't from the same household! She is soooooo great. I am actually alot more secure in their safety when they are with her and I really relax on vacation now! Because they are in a more controlled environment - (I trusted my dog sitter but anything can happen.)
She insists on the bordatella vac. I can see it would be really bad for her business if she sent home sick dogs... I understand but I don't like it.

That's awesome, Amyjo!!! If I could find someone like that to board my dogs with, I would probably risk a bordatella vacc too!!!
I have personally visited all the kennels in our area and wouldn't feel comfortable leaving my dogs with any of them! They were just like being in a shelter...small little runs, and they would be locked in about a 5x5' area from 5 at night until 8 the next morning! If they had access to the outdoor kennel run at night too, it wouldn't be so bad, but there is no way my dogs would potty in that small an area. In fact, I know Pup wouldn't potty in the kennel period, no matter what the size. He doesn't even like to go (poop) in our yard and will hold it until our walk! He is so weird!

Sibemom - That would be a great source of continued fund raising for your foundation! A good boarding kennel attached to your facility!

Hey now that is a good idea I will have to run that past them. It would generate income and also give the dogs a better place to stay then what is available now.

That would be a great idea, Ann. I would be your 1st customer. Only one of the kennels I visited had a fenced in exercise area, but it was not very big and had no shade at all and that was one of our hotest summer's! All the other ones had no fenced exercise area and the dogs were walked on leash twice a day, or so they said. I also don't trust most of the owner's/worker's. It's just a business and a very lucrative one. I would be afraid they would put a bark collar on Kerra at night, because she hates a kennel and does bark if she is left in one for more than a couple hours!

Do any of you raw feeders wonder just how far you are willing to go for the love of your critters? I think I just found my limit. I stopped by the meat section today to see what was cheap... and they had these "pork picnic halves"....not sure exactly what that means - but they were well over 4 lbs and looked like the top of a leg where it meats the body...anyway the skin was still on and everything... I hacked off the big chunks of meat and could barely cut through the skin I almost puked...

I assume they were fresh hams and not smoked? Hams wouldn't bother me but I draw the line at green tripe. (cow stomach). I've never even seen it in any stores around here, but I wouldn't buy it anyway, even if they had it and it was CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP!!! ;D

My two would KILL for liver - they love it.
And I think I would stop short of bringing home something live and killing it for them, but I haven't found anything yet that would gross me out so much I wouldn't feed it . . . I'd do the green tripe if I could find it . . . . maybe squid?
