Boy, it’s my month for dogs! First, 2 weeks ago, a volunteer picked up 3 dogs – 2 pups that were supposed to be 9 month old black labs that the owner was going to shoot, and a chocolate lab/springer mix from a shelter. Well the springer mix was an angel and got adopted last Friday. The two “black lab puppies” really were 9 months old, but they were HUGE, bigger than my yellow lab!!! I think they were newfie mixes. So, for the first time ever, I swapped them for a black lab male from an all breed rescue. Then I get nuts from some of the other volunteers wanting to know why! Well, I’m sure they don’t want 2 unsocialized, unhousebroken, huge litter mates in their house, who not to mention would take months and months to place since they had no lab in them at all!!! Good news is, the black male I got is a sweetie.
Then, last week, this yellow german shepherd (yep, looks exactly like a shepherd – ears, tail, size, coat, everything – except she’s yellow!), shows up at my house. I came home when it was already dark out, I open my door and this dog jumps on me and starts licking my face! It’s been 8 days, I’ve called all shelters and town halls in the area, no one has called looking for her. Also, this same dog showed up at my house 2 summers ago, but then she had a rabies tag on so we were able to locate the owner through the vet. No tag on this time of course! Boy, I can’t wait until I find the owner, there will be some bitching going on then. But I still have to decide what to do with her. The 7 day stray hold is up, so I could send her to an all breed rescue also. She’s super nice, and the crazy thing is, I can’t keep her in the outdoor 6’ fenced area, because she jumps it. So she sleeps on the front porch. She has never wandered away from our front yard. Poor dog. People piss me off, she has what looks like a brand new collar, she’s healthy, why the hell can’t people buy a tag for their dogs??? You don’t even really need a tag – use the rabies tag or the new county license tag you get every year from your town. Morons are driving me nuts again!

Then I get nuts from some of the other volunteers wanting to know why! Maybe you can stop the complaining if you make a rule that from now on, since some didn't like you trading dogs, they get to foster the big, unsocialized, out of control ones!! Do the ones even foster who were complaining?

Hey Cathy, nice to see you around ! What, like they ever stopped ? Yeah, they seem to come out of the woodwork in the spring, don't they ? I'm getting to the point where I trust no one to be a decent adopter anymore , we've had one too many slip through the nets recently. The heartless SOB's over at the CACC in NY no longer notifies us of any Sibes that come in because we won't take other mixed breeds. Funny, last time I checked, we were "Husky House", not "All Breed Rescue" .

Do the ones even foster who were complaining? Lois - Some are fosters, some aren’t. But, probably only one would take on one of the pups to foster, much less 2 of them! Yep, the rescue is still driving me nuts? What happened to the good old days?

Sometimes the ones you are iffy about turn out great, other times the ones you thought were a sure thing turn out to be liars. We had a dog returned 2 months ago for: Peeing and pooping in the house Chewing everything – wood work, doors, etc. Can’t be crated, he busts our of everything Horrible off leash, he runs away all the time And, it just so happens the wife is 6 months pregnant Well, I fostered this dog in the first place, then again when it got returned, he didn’t exhibit any of these behaviors. He was perfectly well behaved, a bit over obsessed with fetching, but that’s it. He’s been in his new home a month and they have had zero problems with him. Now, tell me that original adopter isn’t a liar? Cathy

Things are going better Brooke, thanks to that book, how about you? What do you do at animal control? I don’t think I could volunteer at one, but I guess it depends on the size. Definitely not at a big one, knowing every other dog you do something for is doomed for the needle. And then you might end up taking some home and have too many dogs! Cathy

I was thinking about just volunteering on the weekends or something. I was going to call today... Things are going ok right now. I'm back in Indiana with Kuma right now for (hopefully a job) I have to follow up again with them today after they get back from lunch. I talked to my friend who works there and she had talked to the manager who said they were STILL waiting on the background checks... Oh well...it's nice to have a little free time to see everyone and kind of hang out being home. As for shen he's happier than a clam right now because his new video game came in a day early yesterday. (He's still in NC) He ended up getting cable internet so that he could play other people with his playstation online. He was like a kid at christmas. I've never heard him so happy about a game ever. He's apparently gotten addicted to his own online gaming forums as well and because of the character he plays they think he's a girl which he's having A LOT of fun with. One girl actually called him a Ho I'm just glad he's having fun.

Sigh, ain't that the truth? We had the same thing happen a few weeks ago, not only did they have one dog from us, but TWO! See my Arrrrrrrgggggg! post in Temper Temper ;D. That was pretty much the last straw . Who the hell knows why they change their minds, I just wish they'd be honest about it!

Oh the days of rescue. I do miss it because of the dogs but I do not miss some of the people. I think Forest county was the worst. I never did breed specific rescue. I just took in whatever dog needed to be fostered. That particular county though had some real strange ducks and spring had no impact they came out 365 days a year. I always tried to keep in mind that I wasnt doing it for the people I was doing it for the dogs. It is SOOOOO hard though to keep a civil tounge. I lost a chance once on a female shepard because I tounge lashed one of the workers because of how they were treating the dog. She was very sweet but also very frightened and they choose to muzzle her everytime they took her out of her kennel. All this did was make it worse. When I went to pick her up I took her out of the kennel and refused to put the muzzle on because she was no threat. They told me I was taking risks and that I would not be a good candidate to foster her. Well after several 4 letter words later I left without the dog. I felt guilty because I should of stood my ground better and not let my temper and disgust for their lack of knowledge get in the way. Brooke if you have the time I would go and help at the shelter. Right now I dont have enough time to do that but they know that in an emergency they can call and I will come and help. They usualy only call me when they get Sibes in because they have no clue. Someday I will get back into this full swing because even though you meet some real whack jobs the outcome of helping these dogs and getting them forever homes makes it all worth it
