Hi!
Remember me? Ive not been here for a really looooooooooong time. Hope you have all been fine?
I have a new problem I need some advice on.
My father is looking for a new dog. Basjan has finally died of old age. I have moved into my own home with my two dogs so now my father is dog-less.
We found a lady who is looking for a home for her German Shepherd. She came round yesterday with her dog, who is called Tarot. I have some concerns that I would like to list here. Separately they mean very little, but together they paint a picture that makes me a little uneasy.
1) I'm not sure she is committed to giving the dog away - the reason she gives for needing a new home is that Tarot does not get on with her other dog, but she has been looking for a home since April and she just seems a bit ready to find reasons why the dog might not be perfect for us...
2) In the ad, she said Tarot was 5 years old. Then she told me Tarot was 6 and kind of went on a bit about how she looked so young you would never know. But Tarot looks older than 6 to me. Compared to my dog I would say she is around 8? But who can tell.
3)She repeatedly told me about how Tarot has broken out of confined spaces in the past - "bitten through a wooden door" - "broken down two gates".
4)The above breaking out behavior suddenly made sense because - as she was getting into her car to leave she suddenly shouted over the fence to me - "oh and by the way she has not been "fixed" but I know some people who will do it cheaply so that should not be a problem.
5)She did take Tarot to puppy training but did not do any more training after that as "she is very obedient and anyway she only gets walked off leash, and she has a good recall."
Tarot seems like a very nice dog. Very energetic and alert even if not a spring chicken. She reacted nicely to the cats, looking at them with great interest but no indication of prey like behavior. Quite anxious when separated from her mom.
I know that spaying an older dog can create complications so that is a big issue for me. And getting a dog who might try to break out of my fathers yard to get back to her owner is also a worry.
As is an owner who may want her dog back! I am trying to get my father to rather adopt from the SPCA, but he does not want a "problem" dog.
Any advice
