Hi all I have just been made most unwelcome in a UK-based Doggie Forum, for having the temerity to question the widely-accepted view(there) that prong collars are an invention of the devil, and that anyone using them deserves to be tarred & feathered, put in the stocks, then hung, drawn & quartered So, having suggested that they need to be a tad more open-minded, I have come here, to learn from your experiences, and to share mine. We have a very spirited 7-month Belgian Malinois SD(with a touch of GSD in her lineage I suspect). She has a lovely temperament, but an iron will, and a determination to get wherever we are going before her handler With some apprehension I tried her yesterday with a prong collar, and she has been a different dog Without losing any of her spirit she will already walk on a loose lead. No 'correction' was necessary - she is very bright and appears to have figgered it out for herself, right from the word Go!! I look forward to further training, without being continually 'towed along' Roger

Welcome to RB rogerb! You will find it pretty safe here I think. We aren't afraid of the pinch collar or other useful tools like it. I just love the Maleonis. They are so beautiful. I hope you share pictures!

Welcome aboard Roger...as Brooke said, you'll find we're pretty opened minded here to a lot of different dog training views and methods.
A lot of us use a prong collar and the benefits, as you've seen, when it's properly used, speak for themselves.
Fortunately, you'll not get flamed here for your views and experiences when it comes to the prong collar.
There is a very clearly divided line between what we know is the truth and what is bunk when it comes to prong collars. Those who feel they're the tools of the devil need to take some medication and chill out. Any training device can be misused and abused if the person using it is clueless.
But you're here now so settle in and enjoy the ride. We've got some of the best dog people across the globe in this group (along with some mighty good lookin' dogs too!!).
-Richard

Hi, and welcome to Reality. Here we actually welcome diversity based on knowledge. And it's always good to have another Commonwealther on the board.

The Soup Ladle/Throwing Stick/wooden spoon was for administering a gentle reminder when she decided to bite your toes (not v effective I have to admit, as Malinois appear to have v insensitive backsides ) Now she has her prong collar her general 'manners', as well as her lead behaviour, have improved beyond recognition But one of her favourite tricks is to go to the door to be let out, then, as you get up, she jumps into your place on the sofa. She thanks you for the compliments. She does shed a lot - I am thinking of getting an all-tan wardrobe ;D

She's beautiful! My shepherd mix sheds a lot too. I feel your pain there! I sweep twice a day and have a lint roller to pick up the hair off my clothes before I go out the door. Sometimes I even roll it across the carpet!
