My name is megan lovejoy. I live in austin, tx. My fiance and I have 3 cats and 6 dogs: Stella- 8.5 yr aussie? x, Ling- 8.5 yr husky/gsd/lab? x, Kali- 6.5 yr catahoula? x, Bushi- 2.5 yr pit x, Kanga- 2.5 yr pit x, and Poi- 1 yr chihuahua x. All are female, all are spayed except poi, who's appointment is in two weeks.
My fiance currently works as a dog trainer/kennel supervisor at a local kennel. I have in the past worked for or appenticed under several local kennels and trainers, and have worked for vets as well. I have volunteered for local shelters and fostered quite a bit.I have done tons of professional dog training, and came to the conclusion that I love training the dogs, and getting into the knitty gritty of the theories and methods and behaviors, etc, but I hate training the people. So I haven't been training professionally lately. I will be starting a puppy class soon at my vets office, at her request.
I have been reading everyone's posts and am very excited to join in! Recently I have been lurking at two other forums- one very positive reinforcement based and one very traditional based- both of these forums have bashed others who don't agree with their viewpoints! I am delighted to find a forum with people who practice a wide range of training practices, and can discuss them openly. I'm very impressed with how well everyone plays together! ;D
I look forward to being apart of this forum!

Welcome to Reality Megan ! Our being able to have our differences in training styles in a fairly amicable way is what I think sets this board apart from a lot of the others. And yes, dogs are easy, it's the people who can kill you in this business ;D.

Welcome to the board Megan!
People seem to like that we are pretty diverse in training styles. For the most part we do get along pretty well. Thats what the goal was since most boards are pretty one way or the other as far as methods go. Here everyone is free to their opinions here of course as long as it's done respectfully on either side of the fence. An open mind and respect are essential here. Those are my main concerns.
It's something I'm definately going to be focusing a bit more on. It's a forum....there's going to be a spat here and there but I think we're far less catty than the rest. ;D ;D ;D

We do, surprisingly, get along pretty well here at RB. ;D Of course we get into our arguments now and then, but for the most part I think we all try to listen to the other's perspective and I've found everyone here to be really open-minded about everything. Most dog trainers have to teach themselves to get along with the people. For the most part, trainers love dogs so thats why they do what they do...but when it comes to people...yuck.. I look forward to your post...and welcome to RB!

Hi Megan, Welcome to the forum. With 6 dogs, I guess you've seen that there is no "one size fits all" training style. Each of your dogs has a unique way of responding to different cues, and each is motivated by different things.
And yes, that's been my experience too. Dog training is the easy bit, but the people training is bloody hard! I'm sure you'll have lots to contribute, and look forward to learning more about you.
