An alert dog has saved the lives of his family after their home was engulfed by fire early today.
Police said the barks of Jack - a plucky Jack Russell - woke his 34-year-old owner just after 1am (AEST). The sleepy woman walked to the rear of the two-storey Norman Park residence on Brisbane's southside to see why Jack was barking and saw flames at the bottom of the stairs.
She immediately woke her two young children and fled the house.
Police and the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) attended the fire, which had begun to spread to the neighbouring property. The QFRS extinguished the fires at both homes.
The woman's house was extensively damaged and the outer walls of the neighbouring property were blistered and damaged by smoke.
A QFRS spokesman said the family could thank its smoke alarms and Jack for escaping the blaze. "Those old Queenslanders once they start burning they burn very quickly and fierce and the dog certainly saved them," he told ABC radio.
Jack and his owners were not injured and the occupants of the neighbouring property were not home at the time.
