"It fits over the snout and provides good oxygen flow to the animal," Seminole County firefighter Alan Harris said.
Media coverage of Harris attempting to save a dog named "Meatloaf" at a Central Florida house fire prompted the department to buy the masks, according to Local 6 News.
Harris was not able to revive the dog because the oxygen mask was made to fit a human face, according to the report.
Now, Harris and the rest of the department will carry the animal masks.
"Every house fire that we go to, we will have at least one of the kits there at the scene," Harris said.
The masks costs about $67 each and were bought with donations to the fire department.
The masks will be used only in emergency situations, Harris said. Copyright 2004 by Local10.com. All rights reserved
