(AP) - A small dog adopted 11 years ago has turned into a $1 million dollar donation for the Nevada Humane Society. Reno philanthropist Link Piazzo said he was inspired to make the gift because of Punkin, a black cocker mix he adopted from the shelter more than a decade ago. "She is very simply the greatest dog on earth, the smartest dog on earth," Piazzo, 85, told the Reno Gazette-Journal. He said when he saw Punkin, barely 6 inches long in a big kennel all by herself, he had to take her home. "I think Punkin realized that somebody saved her life," Piazzo said. Susan Asher, Nevada Humane Society's executive director, was stunned by the gift. "It's probably the most overwhelming thing that's happened to me at the Nevada Humane Society and I've been here 24 years," she said. Asher said the gift will be used to help build the $13 million Regional Animal Center, a 60,000-square-foot facility to be shared by Washoe County Animal Services and the society. Asher said the society's share is $2.7 million for the center scheduled to open in July 2005. With Piazzo's donation, the society has raised $2.4 million. She said the society's side of the building will be named after Piazzo. --- Information from: Reno Gazette-Journal, www.rgj.com --
