Maker, seller of tainted pet food sued in Alameda County
By Brian Anderson
CONTRA COSTA TIMES
A Livermore couple has accused a Canadian pet food company and a local retailer of making and selling a product that killed their beloved Labrador retriever.
The 4-year-old dog named Gus died Oct. 25 after eating Petcurean Services' Go! Natural dog food, lawyers for Lisa and Mark Hanrahan said today. The couple bought the food at a Livermore Pet Food Express and had been feeding it to Gus for several months before the dog became ill, lawyers said.
Lisa Hanrahan rushed him to a veterinarian, but Gus had suffered irreversible liver failure and did not recover.
Petcurean recalled its Go! Natural dog and cat food, which was sold mostly in California and also in Oregon and Washington. The cause of the problem has not been identified, said Heather Foster, a San Francisco lawyer representing the Hanrahans.
Lawyers seek class status for the complaint, which was filed Monday in Alameda County Superior Court.
There have been at least 100 inquiries in the San Francisco Bay Area, but the food also was distributed in Los Angeles, Foster said. The number of people involved in the lawsuit could climb into the hundreds, she said.
It is the second such lawsuit filed in Alameda County since pets began getting sick and dying in September and October. Cathy Bodhaine of Lafayette and Sasha Match of Piedmont sued Petcurean and Pet Food Express in November, citing similar issues with the dog food.
Bodhaine's cocker spaniel died after spending five days in a hospital for treatment of liver failure.
