Great dog, shame about the handler. I bought and memorised the video, why did I forget that?
It's been almost three months since Finn and I did agility together. My work has had me overseas and interstate, and quite busy on top of that.
But we had some time today, so I used one of the course layouts in Octobers Clean Run magazine. There was a sequence that went Out-Jump-Front Cross-Jump- Rear Cross-Jump.
On the first try, we ran smack bang into each other. I put it down to us both being rusty (and him not watching)
On the second try, he missed the front cross cue and kangaroo-hopped second jump. I mentally cursed "Flaming mongrel he's just not thinking".
I looked at the course diagram again, changed the spacing between the second and third jump, showed Finn the diagram, and tried again. Kind of success, but forced, incredibly slow, and uncoordinated. Had our skills evaporated through non use?
I put him in a down stay and walked the sequence with my imaginary air dog. Bugger! I was doing the front cross in the wrong spot. Why do I always think of the handler LAST?
Funny thing is, when I did it right, he did it right.
