I know it dates me, they don't even have carousels anymore, let alone brass rings, but I couldn't think of a modern analogy.
Anyway, Finn and I entered an Obedience trial, in Novice Encouragement (the Australian equivalent of a fun match). I almost didn't go since we haven't prepared much, and we've been off our training schedule because I've been sick.
It is raining lightly and windy, and we had to get up at 4:30 to make the 7:00 vetting call. Finn was irratic. His heeling had moments of brillance and moments of failure. I think the judge kindly balanced the two to give us an average score!
His stand stays were rock steady and the recall was perfect. We were, in fact, on second place going into the dreaded group stays. Got through the sit ok, then the judge moved a problem dog next to Finn for the down. He actually had problem dogs on both sides. So I kept him on lead and took 1/2 points for the exercise.
Anyway, finished 5th out of 19, out of the ribbons but did not humiliate ourselves. Probably the best outcome we could achieve. I tried to keep it fun for Finn. The judge quite kindly said she would like a dog like him to work herself, and one of the stewards took quite a shine to him and his wagging tail.
Later the judge saw him doing a flashy retrieve off by the side, and said she couldn't wait to see him in trials. Not likely soon, I'm afraid. I'm celebrating with a cold Toohey's Blue or six, and Finn has earned a Kong and a nap.

That is excellent! Is it possible to love your dog from all the way out here? I'm jealous... ;D
