I have recently become interested in the Endurance Test, and wanted to know if there are others on this board who have done it.
The Endurance Test demonstrates the dog's ability to work after being subject to a certain degree of physical strain without showing signs of stress.
The ET begins with a short obedience trial, including heeling, stand stay and recall. During the ET, the dog trots next to the handler, who can run or ride a bike, or 20 km (12.5 miles). There is a 15 minute rest period at the 8km mark and another rest period at the 15 km mark, and a 20 minute rest at the end. There is a vet check of heart rate, breathing and paw pads at the end of each rest period.
The final test is a second obedience test at the end, which includes heeling, dumbell retrieve and the recall.
I think the elements might vary from country to country, but it's the essentially the same as the Ausdauerprufung which is done in preparation for Schutzhund.
Finn and I did our first 20 minute training run this morning, and I'm considering giving it a go.

I've forgotten how to ride a bike. I'm such a spaz. I was doing 20 minutes, ok 2 ten minutes runs, but need a bike to really push Finn into a workout. So I bought a mountain bike, put it together all by myself, was really proud of it, and now I understand why they say pride goeth before a fall. Maybe I can get him a personal trainer . . . .

Bruised but not hurt, thanks, and luckily I thought I'd try just the bike first before taking on bike and dog. Maybe I should buy some training wheels . . . . is there a humiliated smilie?

I've found a scooter here (yes, there is some snow), so if the bike riding doesn't get better I might get one. Thanks for the tip, never would have thought of it.

Got up early and did a run - 6 kms - approx 3 miles with only two breaks - pee marking for Finn and gasping for me. Admittedly, did it in the Downhill direction. Finn's getting the hang of 'PACE' and 'Easy' and has begun to realise that a run is not a walk and different rules apply. Did it all jogging, as I still have not done anything re scooter or bike.
Finn can trot all day long, so apparently it is only my endurance that is being tested. Once again, my dog is better at dog sports than his owner is.
My biggest problem is finding time. To be in training, we're supposed to run 3 times a week with a rest day in between. Yea, right. Apart from weekends I am struggling to find the time to train more than once a week.
Frankly, this post is just to keep me motivated, as having gone public, fierce Arien pride is now at risk. My mother rings me up occasionally to tell me I can't do it - she missed a career opportunity as a motivational coach.

Well - I know that whatever you set your mind to - you will accomplish....You will be so happy if you get a hang of the bike riding thing though. When Elvis was younger he could go 12 miles if it wasn't too hot - hauling ass the whole way...now I just leash him up and ride him around the block because he still loves it so much. - And talk about a leadership exercise - for the first time ever you will be faster and be able to go further than your dog and he will look at you with such awe!
