So, I took Dex for a walk and what do I see... A young "thug" walking a pitbull puppy down the street. I put thug in quotations because this kid was nothing but a punk. Anyhow, he was walking a young pitbull (APBT) puppy and he was intentionally making the dog aggressive towards people. This pup could not have been older than 3 months or so. Anyhow, as people were walking by on the other side of the street, he would grab the dog by the collar and get it riled up. As the dog would lunge and snap, he would pull back on the collar to get it more agitated. Keep in mind the people were across the street, so they werent really to upset about it. I was so mad, and I felt helpless for a couple reasons. First, I was with Dexter and we are still working on getting him to ignore all other dogs around him. I could not go over there to give him a piece of my mind, as Dex would have started going nuts. Also, even if I had been alone, I could not go over there and start hollering. It would be a "perfect" situation for him to teach his pup to be aggressive towards strangers. Just thought I would share this with you guys. It really bothered me. I try not to get all bent out of shape over these things, as its not the first time I have seen things of this nature. I fear greatly for my 2nd favorite breed (dont forget about Akitas ) I only see the problem with APBTs getting worse. I sure hope that someday this fad of owning pitbulls ends, but I dont see it happening.

Hey Jeff....
Thanks for sharing that story....it is indeed upsetting to see any dog treated/trained like that....I too would of had a hard time holding my tougne seeing such stupidity displayed by the goof you described....
Sadly, he's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to "stupid dog owners" and how they can corrupt a dog so quickly. That pit you saw will probably either get shot by the police one day or end up in a shelter where it will be pts...the owner, well, he'll be onto his next dog since the last one, "for some reason, didn't act right".
And as you can see, its always the dogs fault in those people's eye's right?
You did best to keep moving on, not only for your dog but yourself too...buddy was probably armed with a weapon of some sort and wouldn't of listened to ya anyway...

That makes me so sad to hear something like that, it's getting to epidemic proportions with these "thugs" (I call them something else, but this is a public forum ) having these pits. I really think there should be a law in effect, not to ban the breed, but at least have an age set, like 18, to own one. Nah Ann, not lacking in the brains, but think a little further down south, if ya get my drift , the smallness of a particular body part!

Jeff, just don't go to Mesa, Arizona - the spiritual home of lowlife punks with Pitts.
I hate what has happened to Pitt Bulls. The element that are attracted to Pitts for 'street cred' are almost as damaging to the breed as the puppy mills breeding only for size and strength.
The public has an image of Pitts as being uncontrollable killers because that's the image these guys, (and yes, the media) foster and project. That's why Pitts are banned in Queensland, are a "restricted" breed in some states and some Pitt owners can't get insurance in other states. Not because of any flaw in the dogs themselves, but because of what people have done to the breed.
It's sad, but I've put Pitt Bull Terriers down as a lost cause. I don't think the breed will ever recover.
Finn has a wedge shaped bull terrier head - probabably Staffordshire Terrier (or Am Staf) but a tall hound body. He has jaws of steel, is muscular and looks tough. About a year ago, a guy on the street asked me what my 'Pitt' was crossed with.
At first I was kind of offended because he asking in a critical way, but lately I'm thinking it was a compliment.

I have caught some slack on certain boards for saying that I pretty much dont think anyone should be breeding pits. Of the hundreds of byb's and so called responsible breeders I have come across, I can count the number of breeders that are really bettering the breed on one or two hands. I find it kinda odd that many peoples perception of the breed standard now is a low to the ground moose with a huge head. Hehe, people always tihink Dex is a young puppy. On a more positive note, I have had people slam their brakes on their car and ask me "Where did you get your pit? He is beautifu!" My reply "Go check out your local shelter or rescue, you can find TONS of pitties just like my Dexter."
