It was a perfect fall Saturday morning - sunny and crisp. Finn and I were running an agility course in the backyard, working on tight turns using his back legs for power and front crosses. Then 2 Jack Russel Terriers turned up.
All of the houses on View Street back onto open space adjoining the park. My property has two parts. The half with the house is completely dog fenced front and back. The half which backs onto the park is fenced, but not dog proof. Especially for a couple of tiny terriers.
I'd seen them working their way up back of the property lines, from about 8:00 this morning. At first when they came up near my fence, I was happy to use them as a distraction. Finn was being surprisingly good at focusing at the jumping, finding the lamb treats in the Tug N Treat more interesting then the invading dogs.
But my neighbor's GSD pup was going crazy in her backyard, which was winding Finn up a bit. When the GSD started trying to jump the fence - which it probably could do ! and the terriers started digging at my back gate, I decided to do the responsible thing for their own protection.
I secured Finn in the house, then went out and called the Jacks. Sweet, happy little dogs. Desparate for attention. They both had collars and tags, so I put them in my pen, took the collar off "Candy" and called the phone number. No answer, so I left my name, address and phone number.
I gave them some water and couple of frozen chicken necks to keep them occupied. A couple of hours later, I had a knock on the door. The owner had arrived, sans leashes or concern. He said was visiting a few houses away, and had "Just let them out for a run".
I retrieved his dogs from the back, and he called them and just turned and walked away. No Thank You, which really ticked me off. I'd put my own plans on hold and the bastard couldn't even be bothered to shut my front gate on his way out.
So, a couple hours later outside my front window I see the same two little Jacks loose again, this time on the street.
Just about the time I was thinking about calling the Humane Society, I hear a car screach and a scream. One of the dogs got hit by a bus bringing back some old people from a shopping trip.
My neighbors on the other side, the crazy Queenslanders, whisked the poor little sprocket up to the vets. I don't know how badly it was hurt, but she was still alive and hopefully will be ok.
It really, really frosts me. These were not strays, they were two cute little overweight dogs with collars and tags. Clearly, someone cared for them on some level. Why did the owner thought the dogs could be brought to visit and just be turned loose is a mystery to me. Maybe he will have learned a lesson - I hope it doesn't cost him a dog.
