The good, honest, ethical mechanics out there must hate that so much of this goes on in their profession. It does seem like too many are simply out to fleece people. I think we all have stories about rip-off artists when it comes to cars. And one of the many things my father taught me, is that any time you buy a used car you should expect to get less than you hoped you were getting.
I feel really bad for your son. What a rotten thing to happen. Hopefully the small claims action will recover at least some of his money. Although it's not much consolation, you can be sure that karma will get the car seller sooner or later.

That is a terrible thing to do! Especially to a young person who's been saving up!! I hope the claim suit helps. People! *mutter*.

Ok, so let me get this straight....the guy who sells the car works for the municipality right....and the "part-time" mechanic is a "part-time" minister at one of the local Bible churches in town right?
Well it sounds like they are a couple of "wolves-in-sheeps-clothing" types to me....I'd drop a nickle on buddy with his city employers as to what kind of deals he's making on the side (betcha he's something like the budget controller eh?...more sounds like the guy who picks up the trash at the curb though)...as for Mr. part-time mechanic, too bad you couldn't find out what church he works at and give them a little dingle too...."guess what so-and-so does when he's not preaching thou shall not lie to another human being? Yeah, helping to screw a kid out of $900 bucks...."
From another perspective, yes it sucks he maybe out $900 (I say may cuz this isn't over yet) but at the same time, when we're young, we all need to learn some lessons like this....I too was scammed and it cost me almost $600 (this was back when I was 18 years old so you can figure how much that would be today) for a paint job by a couple of "fly by nighters" who promised the world but came up short by a few zillion miles...after they painted the car (in the middle of the night in some scummy garage) they immdediately parked it outside where shortly thereafter, it began to rain very heavily....the paint job was ruined.....and I learned that not everyone who smiles and says, "sure I'll help you" has your best interest at heart...the secret is not to get jaded and think everyone is like that (that feeling only comes later, after 40 when you really understand what life is about ...hahahahaaaa ...ok, just kidding..really).
It makes one smarter and more aware of how we handle things and when to walk away and not give things a second thought....as the old saying goes, "if its too good to be true, then it probably isn't".
Ann, your son will be fine, this will work out...he is going to be that much smarter and the fact there is a honest mechanic helping out now will show him not every single person out there is a crooked scumbag...he will just know the difference sooner next time..

Yes, this was truly unconscionable what they did, and having two sons of my own and going through their *car deals* when they were young, this really breaks my heart too when I hear what happened to Josh.
when things like this happen, I just keep saying, *what goes around, comes around*....and it will.

Thanks guys for the words of compasion. Josh is feeling better today because he went to drive the Grand Am with Charlie (the very nice honest mechanic). He had a long talk with Josh and told him he would be there in court to back him up when it comes to that. I wrote an article for our local paper and put it in the Sound Off section. I am also going to send this jerk a certified letter telling him exactly what I am going to do. Maybe if I play my cards smart we wont have to take it to court and he will fess up and do the right thing. I am going to get the paper work on Monday from the court house and get ready file the claim. And Yes Nicki you bet I am naming that Minister Mechanic in the suit along with the seller. Josh could have gotten killed by driving that car thank God it did only last for a few hours. Even if nothing comes of this I will at least have shown my son you stand up for your rights and don't let people take advantage of you.

Oh Ann, jeez, that's not only criminal, but what if something catastrophic happened when Josh was driving it?! Did these boneheads even think that they could be charged with manslaughter ? Scamming's one thing, but that's being reckless with a life, I hope you nail them! And while it's a tough lesson, it's one that your son will not forget for a very long time , so that's not such a bad thing.
