From the BBC News, 18 November Chelsea the poodle has given Santa "Claws" a whole new meaning. Pet groomer Hannah Moore, of Bridgend, south Wales, has coloured and clothed her parents' dog as Father Christmas as part of a demonstration. Red food dye covered much of Chelsea's body, her paws, tail and face were left a natural white, and a black belt completed the seasonal look. She will return to a natural state for a white Christmas, as rain or snow will wash away her festive flavour. Ms Moore said: "With the time of the year, I first thought of Halloween, but it had gone past that, so I thought of this festive little number. "It's obviously worked a treat. "The (dyes have) obviously got to be safe and humane, they are not dyes from a hairdresser like peroxide. "I don't think she knows what colour she is, but she enjoys all the fuss and attention. She used to be a show dog, so she knows how to stand for preparation. Unfortunately, it's food colouring, so if she goes out in the rain it will run. But she absolutely loves the attention, she's a confident dog, which you need for this." Comments?

I have the feeling that if that dog could talk it would have two words for it's owner, and they probably wouldn't be "Happy Birthday" . Why can't we just allow them to be dogs, why must we feel compelled to dress them up and do things that are, in all likelyhood, abhorent to them ? I think that woman needs a hobby badly .

WHY Is'nt a Santa Hat or little Coat enough Why do they have to dye the dogs hair I remember when the boys were being, what they thought was funny, and said they were going to give my mom's dog a bath. They never mentioned that they were going to use green jello as one of the conditioning agents Poor Gizmo here he was green as grass, and not liking it what so ever. Well they got their butts right back up to the tub and washed every last stitch of green off the poor dog. It's just like at Easter when people think it's funny to dye baby chicks Pittiful, and your right this woman needs to get a life

While I would never do it to any of my dogs, and I think it looks absolutely rediculous, I don't see anything wrong with it. People can do much worse things to their pets, like not feeding them, not exercising them, cutting back a dog's ears to make them look tough...and so on.
Dogs aren't concerned about looks like we are. They don't notice if one of the dogs fell into blue paint and is covered in blue, or some dog has his toenails painted red (which I think is probably the worst dressup thing a person could do to their pet..ughh) or whatever.
Its good, clean, holiday fun...as long as the animal isn't in any pain or discomfort, I see nothing wrong with it.

Did you notice it was a "groomer" who came up with this?
This will put big bucks in her pocket when people see her dog and want theirs done the same way.
Anything to make more $$$$.

I'd be mostly worried about it rubbing off around the house. I doubt food coloring will hurt the dog...I think it's rediculous though. I actually found out not too long ago there is actually an ordinance that is against people from dying their pets fur in my area... I wonder how common that is.

They don't notice if one of the dogs fell into blue paint and is covered in blue, or some dog has his toenails painted red (which I think is probably the worst dressup thing a person could do to their pet..ughh) or whatever. I am not so sure about that. ;D When Reign was a pup and I still trusted him around male dogs, there were dogs that we would play with. Well one dog had booties on and the other dogs wanted nothing to do with him and the bootied dog was so depressed. And there are stories of shaved dogs hiding under beds from humiliation ;D and of other friend dogs not recognizing the shaved dogs or wanting to play. I am not 100% sure that a dog doesn't notice when another dog doesn't look like a normal dog. I don't think the poodle is hurt by this and I am sure he does love the extra attention but the human is doing it to amuse herself and other humans. I don't know. I wouldn't do it although I have been known to put antlers on my dog and that is soley for my pleasure certainly not the dogs!!! I have a picture of Sunny in antlers for halloween but I don't know how to post it.

She said the dog loves all the extra attention, so hey, more power to her! I wouldn't do it (then again, probably hard to dye a black dog, right? ;D ) But no harm was done to the poodle, so rock on!

It is very common for people to dye horses tails, not to mention touching them up with 'make up' for the show ring, so I guess there is no real moral difference here.
That said, I wouldn't do either personally.
