Thats horrible...I agree with Iluvmypup that this lady is not clickertraining. But since this dog is so 'tuned in', I think the clicker has become virtually useless for this dog. He's become almost 'spoiled' with it, if that makes any sense. Poor dog...

Maybe you are asking too much. Most training is either too bleeding heart volunteer one size fits all- or/-all dogs must be dominated lest they bite- jerk correct one size fits all.
If dogs were WELL trained using positive motivation with knowledgable handlers, many would be perfect. But instead, we have too many partially sometimes kinda sort maybe responding to purely positive; some slowly depressively responding, corwered, hardened or shutting down because of badly done adversive training; and very few taking a balanced effective approach using what suits and motivates their dog best. Very few professionals are comfortable experimenting with a new approach for each dog - they tend to stick with what has worked in the past for most dogs.
As a non-paid obedience instructor who is in it only for the glory, I see a lot of terribly confused, desparate badly contra- advised semi-defeated but sincerely genuine owners who are grateful for any crumb of guidence that doesn't blame them or condem their dog.

I very much agree with what you said here. Boy I have noticed another type of training style. It's used by people who don't bother to find out anything about dog training or about their dog. Since they can't control their animal and their animal is alive and with spirit, the animal tries to survive and get their needs met for security, exercise, interaction, ect., which these folks don't seem to care about. This method is called ,I will overfeed my dog until he can't run away,or cause trouble and his/her spirit of aliveness is dead because he can hardly move. In my little town I see obscenely fat dogs all over the place. Almost always they are untrained. I'm not kidding here, I think this is why they do it to these dogs even if unconsciously.

This is the reason i pull for more stringent dog ownership legislation. It is just to easy to get a dog (without knowing a damn thing about them) and then give them away, cause they either realize they are unqualified, or blame the dog. the myth of timmy and lassie is just that,a myth. You do need some education to properly know how to handle a dog. I am not soley a postive trainer. I do not strike my dogs. but i do punish them. i do pysically punish them. dogs are very phsical animals. And if you don't believe me, you don't watch enough national geographic channel. I do have to say in the terms of training I do not punish very often. i give the dog the benefit of the doubt that maybe thier is a communication breakdown. Maybe I need to re-teach them. as far as behavior modification goes, i tend to use more correction than praisor reward. I try to use the least amount of force necassary to gain compliance. especially in terms with aggression and other very anti-social behaviors.
