A variation in the purebred v mongrel conversations which have run across a few threads. I recently saw ad advertisment for an Agililty Camp in the US for Border Collies only that took place last year. Hosted by one of the high profile name clubs, it covered the special problems BC often have - circling behavior, excitability, excessive speed. The criteria to register was the dog MUST be purebred AKC registered - unregistered purebreds and cross bred BCs not allowed. There was NO PERFORMANCE criteria at all. So, allegedly the camp was to focus on specific problems, but the entrance critera was only on breed. Border Collies dominate the sport, so catering training to their breed make sense based on pure numbers. But what's the harm in saying "If your dog has these performance problems . . . ." knowing that BC's will make up the majority of attendees. Border Collies are so naturally inclined to it, I think a case could be made that there's a greater need for camps for NON BCs who have to work harder to develop their skills. But I believe that discriminating against BCs would not be tolerated. Just a hunch, but an advertisment for All Breeds except BCs, or a Mixed Breeds Only camp - purebred dogs prohibited- would be sued out of the market on grounds of discrimination. Certainly there is breed discrimination in the show ring and we all understand that. But in the performance arena, is there any reason for it?

I will say it over and over again. It is not what is in your dog is that makes it a good dog but what YOU put into it that makes it a good dog. Mixes, purebreds, whatever. Good GOD most Humans are not purbreds so why is there such a snobbery about dogs that are mixed breeds. I loved every single one of the mixes I have worked with. I have owned several mixes and in actuality they were much easier to train. So yes I think there should be special camps for mix breeds depending on what your sporting ability is. You gotta remember it's all about the cash and the status. Wouldnt it be fun to take a mix turn it into a herding or agility champion? I think they would eat their snobby little words

No, and I think it's horses**t that they are breed specific. Particularly with agility and BC's, because the last time I checked, BC's weren't bred to run through and over man made obsticles, but were created to HERD SHEEP . Herein lies my problem with the AKC. The double standards and the hypocrisy that they support are nauseating at best. If they were truly concerned with breed standard, they'd throw a bunch of woolies in the show ring and let the dogs corral 'em up.

And they wouldn't grant registration to puppy mill etc dogs who clearly do not meet the breed standard. ..but that is a different topic. I had to say it anyway.

It is stupid at best Right now I am the owner of two purebreds but do I care about the AKC NO. I think that what they allow to be shown sometimes is the worst representive of the breeds, and by that I mean can these dogs really do what they were bred to do Probably not. When I see the FAWN EYED Siberian comming into the ring or the backend crawling GSD it makes me sick. What they show is someone's interpertation of how a breed looks good to them. Does it make a better dog NO. I get mad when I see dogs that I know are prime examples of what the type is suppose to look like and they do not place. I get tired of the people who push purbreds at the general public also. I always go to the shelter FIRST before I make up my mind on a dog. Put those sheep in the ring and I will show you that not only can those darn husky's with questionable pedigree pull a sled but they can KNIT TOO!
