First I will say that I don't do this.....anymore. A few years ago my computer guy loaded a sharing site into my computer (I forget the name but it was the subject of an FBI investigation recently) but I never used it because I didn't understand how. The only thing I got from the site was 3 viruses and because of that I won't download anything anymore.
I think that people should be able to download things for their own use. It is just like taping a song from the radio. And I don't disagree with sharing with others as long as there isn't a money motive. Similar to giving the tape to a friend. I think that is the price of having your information out there. If money or profit of any type is involved in the sharing then I think that it is theft.

See thats what I think Nicki. Its no different from taping off the radio or a movie or show off television.... I've really missed Napster. I don't download anything anymore unfortunately.

The boys use to download from Kazza but when all the crap was going around about it being illegal etc... I got rid of it. We use to use Napster. Now I told them if they want to download music we can search around for a Pay Site. I don't think it should be illegal if it is for your own use. Why would I buy a whole CD if I only like one or two songs?

Thats what I'm sayin Ann! Shen is a cd buyin freak. I swear out of everything the main thing that he buys are CD's and video games. The amount of money he spends on cd's is outrageous and I will admit, he gets good use out of them but he doesn't take good care of them. He never keeps them in cases and they get scratched up all the time. His fault, nobody elses. I realize that.
I don't really listen to music all that often. I did more so in high school than I do now. It is a very rare occasion that I will break down and buy a cd for exactly that reason Ann. I hardly ever listen to the whole thing and I can't see spending 10-$20 on a hunk of plastic that I don't use completely. Its just not worth it to me. Every once and awhile I will but only if its something I'm going to continue to listen to for a long time.
I went to the store and bought this program (DVD X COPY XPRESS) for my DVD writer in my laptop so that I could copy dvd's whether they were encoded or not. Get it quick because apparently the company that makes this program is in litigation for obvious copyright reasons. It eventually won't be available.
Their arguement is, why should someone have to go out and buy the product brand new again because it got scratched or something and why should someone be restricted to do things with something they bought and paid for? Someone should be able to purchase what they get and be able to do with what they want to with it as long as they aren't making a profit off of it as a resale or sale item.
I can kind of see where this is unfair on both sides but...again, we go back to the radios and vcr's. How can you condone one thing if you don't condone another? No one sued the companies making VCR's or cassette decks...No one is suing the companies making the recordable dvd players....why?

I agree with you 100% Why wasn't anyone having this fit over cassete recorders or vcr's? It makes no sense. When I was reading about it Time Mag, the whole issue was brought about because their sales went down for the initial CD. Well SO WHAT I think they charge way to much for them anyway so if you want sales to go up you drop the price. I dont think with the amount of money these artists make they are hurting in anyway because people are downloading music for their own use. For me I like a variety of music, Hard Rock, Rap, Country, Classical, Jazz, Techno, etc... That is why I was making driving CD's with a mix of all the songs I liked on them. HA HA I did that before all the uproar. If they want my music they will have to fight me for it! Hey what happened to the smilies?

Now that you mentioned it, Kazza was the program that I had. There are so many CD's that I have where there is only one song on the entire CD that I listen to. They do that deliberately. They wouldn't think to put two good songs on the same CD. Did you know that they arrested a 12 year old for downloading music from Kazza. She (her parents) was fined thousands of dollars. She was supposed to be made an example of.

I am of the mindset that if I want to listen to music, I either turn on the radio or buy a CD or Tape....I mean it's very convenient to download off the internet but like everything else in life, it comes with a price..sometimes more than what the thing you wanted to do in the first place was really worth....as an example:
Kazaa, that is a piece of $*** software...it has cooked so many peoples computer systems it is almost worse than a virus...It is worse than a cancer..it gets into every nook and cranny of your computer and literally serves up your computer (for those with cable or ADSL internet connections - they stay on all the time) to the world...and hey, not only the kazaa files but the rest of your files as well....whoops...if you don't download the proper version (there are a few out there) you can thoroughly echure your system in one shot. When I was at the cable company doing tech support, we got tons of calls from people who's cable internet stopped working..after doing all the normal checks, I'd ask, did you download kazaa? 9 times out of 10, the answer would be yes...I'd say look for a few key files and if they were there, your system was mucked up but good!!
I hate things like that....plus, all that downloaded and uploaded (those who take files from your computer) also goes against your usage limit....mine is 15GB up/down per month..I've been on cable internet for almost two years now and I've never gone above 850mb....one guy I saw one day had 18GB in one month alone...his account was frozen cuz of that...when he called, it was because he had kazaa on his computer (plus a couple of dozen viruses...)...he simply had no clue (which isn't an excuse..sorry).
So, does the end justify the means...? I don't think so in this case. Anyone can get anything they want on the internet if they look long enough...but at the same time, you could be opening up a pandora's box of problems if you chose to go down the wrong path.
For all the hassles, legally and ethically (c'mon, you gotta consider all of them), I just think its just easier going over to a local music store and buying the CD's I want.
The biggest bonus is that I don't download software that comprimises my computer and can shut it down if I'm not paying attention (and I do, trust me, I do)

I haven't downloaded music since they shut down Napster awhile back. I miss it thats for sure. Napster was so easy to use. I didn't play around with kaaza or limewire or any of that because of all the virus problems.
I don't download music, but I sure don't buy it either. Infact I listen to music a lot less than ever since.
