This is actually a DVD review, of Raising A Working Puppy by Leerburg Video Production. Mixed feelings.
The video is narrowly aimed at raising a working dog - schutzhund, Search & Rescue, police work, agility, competition obedience. It highlights, sometimes only highlights without substance, the differences between raising a pet puppy and raising a working dog.
I thought the section on Socialising - "Neutralising" as Ed calls it, was excellent, if a tad controversial. With a working puppy, he works on having the pup ignore other dogs and other people. Not be friendly with, but ignore. Be completely neutral to. This is something that may have worked well with Finn if I had done it this way.
The method shown of taking the pup to different enviroments that will slightly stress it, but making sure the pup is successful and overcomes the stress was well explained and brillant. As to the discussion on crating and traveling. Good stuff.
The chapter on Exercise, and games were too short on material, more the edict to Play games that build drive, and less ideas for games that you can play to build drive.
My DVD had quality problems - two of the chapters froze up and lost sound at the end. The chapter on Games had a really loud wind noise over the narrative.
And I was startled when I hit The End - either I was too intent on the content or it was a fairly short video. It runs about 45 minutes, so I'm leaning towards the fairly lean video. I think it needs to be viewed in conjunction with Grip Drive and Focus, as it references the ball on string and grip work in that video. Or just buy Grip Drive and Focus.
