Has anyone ever read or heard of a book called "The Dog Listener" by Jan Fennell and Monty Roberts? A friend of mine called me and was asking about it. She bought it and said she was enjoying it. I dont know anything about it just thought one of you might have read it. Sounds like a Dog Whisperer kind of thing.

Yeah, I did read it, got a bit of info from it, not enough for the price of the book however . Ann, you should know Monty Roberts being a horsewoman, he be da famed Horse Whisperer . Not that I'm knocking him, I saw him in NY doing a seminar and he's very good, but I really don't know how much of his knowledge converts from equine to canine, it's like apples and oranges ;D.

Have you seen the movie the Horse Whisperer? I really enjoyed it. If that is what "whispering" is it wasn't portrayed as a purely positive method. It was more a battle of the wills with an "I am going to win and there is nothing that you can do about it" attitude on the part of the human (Robert Redford ;D). At one point he brought the horse to his knees forcefully with a rope tied around it's front leg and the horse finally gave in to him. It was also about trust and non verbal cues to communicate trust. It sounds like an interesting approach if this is what the method is. Not that I completely understood it.

I used to ride horses weekly as a kid. I LOVED it. I want to have horses some day. Shen is so afraid of them because of their size. It doesn't bother me at all. We went out to his families house last summer and they had a horse who was beaten before they got it. He was really head shy. They showed me if they raised their hand up over his head to pet him he would buck and go crazy.
I sat with him most of the day and kind of bonded to him. He was really sweet. They were amazed he let me pet him up on his head. I don't think they really spent much time with him other than feeding him. It probably would help. I just love horses....I can't imagine having one and not spending much time with it.

When Mira USA gets built here there will be horses on site, they are used for distraction training for the dogs. I have my feelers out there for rescues. I want the ones that no one else does, or that others have given up on. Even if they can't be used as saddle horses at least they will have safe and happy homes with us. ;D ;D No more pain, no more abuse just LOVE ;D ;D ;D

Monty Roberts is the original *horse Whisperer*. I read his book and have seen specials on him and I do agree with his method of *join up* with a horse, which isn't cruel at all. I have never heard of him or seen him put a horse down, but maybe he does behind the scenes? ;D The problem with that method is that you have to follow through with it and not let the horse back up until it submits and will lie there while all sorts of distractions are going on. If you let the horse back up before doing that, it won't do a bit of good, and may even make the horse worse.
I was a horse person in my *former life* too! ;D
