I was wondering if any of you have or have had any interest in target training. I just started doing it with Skipper, and he's already following the stick around within a day..what a smart boy. I plan on teaching the trick "Are you scared?" with it. Basically when asked the question (actually, I'll be using a hand signal just in case...don't want to have to keep repeating 'are you scared...skipper, no...are you SCARED...SCARED, Skipper'...you get the picture. That wouldn't work out very well. ), he should run between my legs, and look up at me. He's the only one I can do it with, as my other dogs would probably knock me over when going between my legs. Hehe. ;D

I've used target training with Finn in Agility - teaching to push against the leading hand, and eventually to follow the leading hand. This helpd "the obedience problem" of always going to the left side.
I also used targets the teach the Send Away (obedience) and the Out (Agility) . For the Send Away, I used a treat on a paper plate, taught him to run to the target, kept moving the target to different places, and gradually reduced the size of the target by tearing up the plate. For the out, I used treats inside a film cannister.
With Sailor, I taugh turn 'Off the Light' using a Post it Note as the target. Target training is really good for the tricks.
I've found targets really useful when you want to teach the dog to go do something independently at a distance from you. Once they learn to touch the target regardless of where the target is, the command just naturally falls into place.
