Uses – Freestyle Dancing Movement, Show off trick, can also help a timid dog with straight fronts on a recall, as the dog is not scared of moving close to your legs
Equipment – food in each hand. Coordination is very helpful
Method - Dog is taught off lead in distraction free area
Note: This is the method I used to teach Sailor who is both praise and food motivated. If you are five foot tall, and your dog is a Great Dane, you might have problems performing this trick gracefully.
Walking Leg Weave
Stand with one foot out front, as if you have just taken an exaggerated big step. Lure dog through with food. It is easier if you have dog on left, right foot forward. Slip your right hand down below your right knee, holding a piece of food and lure the dog in front of your straight left leg and under your outstretched right leg.
Then put left foot forward in an exaggerated step ahead of your right foot. The dog should still be on your right side from the first cross over. Use your left hand with a piece of food just under your left leg, and lure the dog in front of your right leg and under your left leg.
Do this several times on each side, and then introduce the command "weave" or any other word you are going to use. Do this several times until the dog easily goes under your right leg and waits for your left leg to move to go through.
Then ask for two leg weaves before rewarding. Gradually phase out the food and reward intermittently, so the dog never knows when the reward will appear.
As you both gain confidence and timing, make your footsteps less exaggerated and phase out hand signals through the legs. Finally, work on speed and synchronisation.
