Elsie has occasionally been vomiting the last two months. The only thing that has come out so far has been slimy clear or foamy stuff. She only does it once a week and feels fine afterward so we haven't been too worried about it. We just assumed she ate something that didn't agree with her those days.
At 5am this morning I heard her vomiting again in her crate. I let her outside and went to clean the crate. There was a furball almost the size of a baseball on her bed. I was surprised at how large it was considering she is so small. It had bits of food in it but for the most part it was hair. Elsie does lick her feet sometimes when she chews her nails down. Other than that, she doesn't lick herself. However, she does "groom" Sadie on a regular bases. The fur did look like Sadie's fur.
I figured I would ask you all if you have encountered this and possible solutions. I have never had a dog that coughed up furballs before. Is there anything I can give her to prevent the build up? I was thinking of including pumpkin or shredded carrots in her food. I am hoping the fiber would help her pass it naturally. I haven't tried giving fish oil to Elsie but I did feed her mackerel last night. Maybe that lubed the ball up enough for her to get it up? She obviously has been working to get it out for awhile. Poor thing. I plan on stopping her from grooming Sadie so much. I wouldn't think furballs could lead to a medical issue like blockage but I don't know.
The Vet isn't open right now so I can't ask them. They will probably want me to change her to a prescription food but I don't want to do that. Any ideas?
