Well unfortunately the mass is back. This time I am not as panicked because I know it isn't cancer. He was doing so well. He was like a puppy again.
They took an aspirate and cytology confirms it isn't cancer and that it is inflammatory cells. So far the culture has not grown any bacteria but we need 48 more hours to be sure. They didn't find saliva so it isn't from the salivary gland.
The vet thinks it is a reaction to retained suture but he does not want to go in to take it out. There was still some suture right under the surface that he did take out. But there is more in the under layers. The suture is supposed to dissolve in two weeks but it can take 90 days and some dogs have a delayed reaction.
His hair was almost grown back and now he is shaved again.
So we will see. We have to wait for the final culture before we do anything else. We may end up just monitoring it which I would prefer if it isn't painful. It is right near the esophagus though so if it grows, it can impede his breathing and eating. I really don't want him to have surgery again and risk getting all those hospital borne bacterias.

That is unfortunate that Sunny has to put up with yet another mass - in the same spot too - well, really it sucks cuz it's something you thought you guys had taken care of.
I'm glad you're on top of what is happening though and I do hope this time things will be resolved without having to have Sunny go back into surgery. Keep us posted.

Thanks guys. We have an appointment tomorrow at 10:00 and we should have the final culture by then. I would love them to get the suture out but then they will have to suture from cutting to take the suture out. That's a conundrum if there ever was. Richard I wanted to tell you that I LOVE your new avatar!!

Suture needed after taking the suture out? Indeed, that is wierd but I guess you can't get to the old one without a big enough space eh? At least this time you know what you're up against which lowers the stress factor. As for the photo of the sheppy's, thanks - we had a family portrait done a few weeks back and we were able to bring Rocky and Nikki along who were more than happy to smile for the camera .
