I thought I should post this here instead of in general conversation since this is certainly health related.
We picked Sunny up today. Oh boy, was he happy to see us. Too happy though, he was going so crazy that the vet decided that he had to wrap his neck or the drain was going to be dislodged. It isn’t a tube. It is a piece of long something that goes into the wound to keep it open and hangs down. As you can see, Sunny is not at all happy with the wrap. His neck is all shaved too!!
We go back on Sunday morning to have the drain removed.
We spoke to the vet and he just can’t tell me that it can’t be cancer despite my trying to get him to tell me that. He said it could be a cyst from the salivary gland (trauma to the gland or bacteria in the gland can cause this because the gland clogs) or an abscess or cancer. The structure is cystic and not solid which is good but there is such a thing as cystic cancer also. The best possibility is an abscess because the capsule will reabsorb into the body and treatment is limited to just follow up checks. If it is a cyst then he has to take some of the capsule out and maybe the salivary gland or it will regrow. Right now all the fluid is gone but the capsule is still there.
The problem is that not only is the capsule near major arteries and veins but also nerves so it cannot be taken out completely which is going to be a problem if it is cancer. Otherwise he said he would have taken it all out and he wishes that he could have done that. There is fibrous tissue around the capsule which he said can come from an abscess also and this tells him this has been there for a while. When I asked how long he definately hesitated a minute and then said weeks or months but I wonder if he kept the time shorter than he wanted because we had the exam 5 months ago. If he said longer he might be implicating the other vet. This is what wellness visits are for right?? I really can’t think about that aspect of this right now.
He is on antibiotics and also a short run of Rimidyl which I am not happy about. But what is there to do to ease post-op pain. They only gave me two pills one for tomorrow and one for Sunday so I am just giving it.
And of course I over analyze everything so I think maybe he is giving me false hope so I have a good weekend with Sunny but then I regain my sanity and realize that he probably wouldn't do that.
We will know the results after labor day. I think a body dip in hot oil would be less torturous than the wait. I have to laugh or I will go crazy!!
Now, I have to just throw my computer out the window because the stuff I am reading is making me sick to my stomach. There is just way too much information out there.
Oh and everyone said what a great dog he is and what a good boy he was. The vet tech said she fell in love with him. He would howl at her from his run (she asked if he was part husky ;D) so she would go and sit with him in the run. And he wasn't eating, so she hand fed him. I am going to send a gift when this is all over because they all took such good care of him.
I am so glad he is home. He is sound asleep at Brian's feet, his favorite place in the world.
This is me right now. times 100.
