I have a rather SMELLY QUESTION Willow has been doing alot of BUTT CHASING At first I thought it was just bordem but then I noticed she was'nt chasing her tail she was CHASING HER BUTT So I did the deed of checking under her tail and her anal gland are a little puffey. So my question is SHOULD I TRY AND EXPRESS THEM MYSELF Or should I take her to the vet I have done it before on smaller dogs but I don't actually know if she will allow me to do this, especially if they are REALLY PLUGGED the other question is to do they really need them do they offer an benefit to them at all I was told that once they get plugged it is more likely that it happens again and then you are better off having them removed. Since she never has consistant firm stools and always has soft ones, I am thinking maybe I should talk to the vet about getting them taken out. Any info on this would be helpful.

No...don't think about removal at this point. Many, many dogs have occasional filling without a persistent problem. Reign had filled glands a few times as a young dog and has been fine ever since. And he doesn't have hard poop.
It isn't just a question of whether they need the glands or whether they serve a useful purpose (they are there to mark and let other dogs know the dog's history...that is why dogs sniff butts) it is a question of a risk benefit decision. There are complications to the procedure that are pretty horrid. Not to say it would happen, but why risk a lifetime of dribbling stool due to anal sphincter damage when you may not have to. I would not even consider removal unless it was a chronic problem, impacting and infecting persistently and causing the dog pain and discomfort.
So get out the rubber glove, get in the bath and give the glands an external squeeze. If that doesn't empty them, then have the vet do it internally unless you know how to do it internally...I do not. I have only done it externally. Put your thumb and middle finger on the 10 and 2 O'Clock location and press down and squeeze like you are squeezing a pimple.
Don't forget the nose plugs!! ;D
