I always add some canned food with Sunny's kibble. I was giving NB Duck and Potato and it was making him smell. He never smelled before. So I decided that I was going to make my own canned food and let me tell you, it is a huge hit. Sunny's smell is completely gone and his coat looks better!! And you can use whatever agrees with your dog.
This is my recipe and it makes about 20 days worth giving a heaping tablespoon two times a day with each meal. He loves it!!!
1 1/2 lb of stewing beef (you can use anything..Sunny does very well with beef)
1 sweet potato
1/2 regular potato
1 banana
1 apple
1 pear
a huge handful of fresh spinach
4 carrots
a handful of fresh string beans
a sprinkle of brown rice--very little--just to absorb some of the liquid
2 scrambled eggs
1 minced large garlic clove
1/2 teas eggshell powder (heat eggshell in oven for a few minutes and then put in processor to grind) to equalize the calcium/phosphorous level -added after it is cooked
cover with water--not too much because you are not going to throw any of the liquid away-that is where the nutrients are.
Bring to boil and simmer until veggies are mush
I then put it through the food processor for about 3 seconds..add the eggshell powder and put in separate rations in the freezer. I put one days worth in a tiny glad Tupperware and take one out each day because I am a freshness freak...you can put a few days in each one.
It is delicious...I tasted it. ;D And you can really add whatever you want.
Now I know it isn't as good as raw but at least I know what he is eating and that all the ingredients are fresh and whole.
