Since this is my first dog, I am not sure how much they shed? Like when I even just rub her arms or something, a ton of hair falls out?

At this time of year my dogs are losing hair in large amounts. They are both double coated and they are "blowing" their under coat. It is insane!!!! I sweep my floors 3-5 times a day and there is still hair everywhere. When ever I touch them, when they scratch, move, shack hair flies. With dogs I had previously (labs) they still shed and while it didn't show up so much on the floors and such but the air always seemed to be filled with it.

Generally, dogs shed a lot. With a smooth single coated dog, you might want to use a hound mitt or a soft brush. Groom outside and often during shedding, and cross your fingers that it's seasonal and not constant.
Of course, patchy hair loss (spot baldness) indicates a skin problem, but if it's just general all over the dog, all over the carpet shedding, well, that's the reason vacuum cleaners were developed, IMHO.

I have "blown up" my vaccume cleaner 3 times vaccuming up dog hair. Thank god for the warranty. I found the greatest thing on an infomercial. It is the rubber broom with fingers that project out of the bottom. It gets all the hair and dirt out of the carpet (even the stuff left by the vaccum) and does wonders for doing the hardwood floors too. They were great during the winter for getting up all the salt and sand that gets tracted into the house. You can also get them at Target now.

Wow thanks for the responses. It is all over and comes off even when she shakes, so I guess it is normal. I bought a brush when I first got her, but it is metal with little spikes and she really doesn't like it... I can understand why. I will just have to get a softer brush. I did read one source that said american bulldogs are heavy shedders though.

I didn't know that about Am Bulldogs. Some breeds shed a lot, some a little, but almost all dogs shed. Even the Mexican Hairless.
The metal slicker brushes are too harsh for her skin. You should look into getting a hound mitt. It's kind of a rubber glove with little knobby things that help remove the hair and are far more suitable for single coated smooth haired dogs.
I like to say that I don't brush Finn, I just polish him. Sailor the Labrador, on the other hand, is a 24/7/52 double coated hair generator.

I have "blown up" my vaccume cleaner 3 times vaccuming up dog hair. If you have some extra cash floating around, the Dyson pet vacuum is worth every penny. I too blew out my previous vac, then got this one on sale for like $250. The first time I used it and saw what it picked up I couldn't believe what my old vac missed. It got so much dog hair out of my carpets that they actually looked beige again! It gets EVERYTHING and dog hair hasn't done any damage to it. Not cheap, but if you can find it on sale it is SO worth it! www.dyson.com/range/feature_frame.asp?model=DC07-ANIMAL
