My girl was spayed yesterday and the only thing I have to watch for is her licking her wound.
Before I go and pick her up, I was checking for suggestions as for any kind of a deterrent that can be applied to her skin that just deters licking, but doesn't harm the wound.
Kind of like that nail polish parents put on the nails of thumb suckers.
Thank you!

Pretty much everything will sting if put directly on the wound at this time, but you can put deterrent around it . Just take a q-tip, dip it in Phooey or Bitter Apple, and draw a line around the incision (careful, not too close!). But your best bet is to put an Elizabethan collar on her, takes away all chances of her gnawing on it.

We had Nikki spayed back in April.
Being 4 1/2 years old (we got her from our breeder who had intended to breed her but didn't) made cost a bit more but she came through very well.
The only side affects were her reaction to the stitches used by our Vet. The incision was healing but the rest of the area was swelling up. She managed to take 2 stitches out herself. A week of meds and she was fine. You can't tell where the stitches were now.
As for your concerns, I think the Vet will have a few tips for you. I'm not aware of anything you can use, other than the good old satellite cone for them. What we did was to make sure I was off for a few days to keep an eye on her. She came home several hours after her surgury (the same day) so we were able to keep an eye on he through the nightr. We figure, if it hadn't been for the allergic reaction, she wouldn't of cared too much about the stitches. Most dogs dont' care, others make it seem like it's a foreign body to get rid of.
You'll know how your girl will be when you get her home. Just base your actions on her mood and fussyness and you'll be fine. Keep an eye on the insicion for a few days.
If all is good, they'll usually ask you to come back in a week or so to take the stitches out.
>>>Laura, we posted almost the same time....

I don't have to worry about her pulling out stitches. It seems my vet is rather on the up and up with the newest procedures (which is why my wallet is now crying empty tears) I just have to keep her from the wound.
The techs told me she's shown no interest in it so far and my mother who watched her for me today while at work told me she was just a sleepy baby all day long.
Thank you very much! They didn't discharge us with an E-collar but I can always go back and get one.

Yep...I do what Richard did. I have had so many foster dogs come to me with stitches still in from a new spay or neuter, it is "no big deal" anymore.
As Richard said, most dogs don't even know they are there and some licking won't do any harm.
We even take them out ourselves now, and oh! Did I mention that when I go to the dentist and have stitches I never go back to have them removed? Duane does them for me! All it takes is the right "tools". ;D

Thank you, guys!
So far, so good. The only time she showed any interest in the incision was when I took a cool, damp washcloth to it to clean away some crusties that formed most likely from her stretching or peeing. She's very good at going down on the floor, rolling over, and letting me inspect the incision.
She only plays at an Alpha doggie. ;D
I'm hoping the lack of interest has to do with the fact all the stitches are dissolvable ones under the skin.

They also have a new type of collar now should you need it. It isn't hard and like a cone. It is soft and padded and goes around the neck extending out making the dog look like a huge sunflower. ;D It just looks so much more comfortable but I am sure it is more expensive also.
I hope your dog heals quickly.

She still has no interest in the incision! The worst of this seems to be the her fur growing back in. They shaved a part of her belly and she's just itching to scratch...when she scratches belly itches, she just stays standing and uses her hind leg, which worries me a smidge only because one wrong balance moment... By the time she's healed she'll never lick or scratch her belly again!
