I believe ive seen the answer to this elsewhere on the board and I apologize for bringing it up again but I couldn't find it. Anyway, my friend just adopted a 2 month old puppy and she was asking me about raw feeding. Basically she wanted to know how early she can put her dog on raw. I had told her to wait til his teeth are all grown in to feed him bones, but raw meat alone would be ok til then. Was this the correct answer? Thanks

Hi John. I don't feed raw but it is my understanding that puppies get the meat AND BONE right from the beginning (when they are weaned). I think just meat is going to cause the runs and not be nutritionally sound.

Yep you start the pup right on the meat and bone combo. Depending on the pups size it should be something they can't gulp and also big enough so that they have to work at it. Chicken is a good protien source to start with, and I would give a 2 month old pup a chicken thigh in the morning the leg in the afternoon and some ground turkey for the last feeding. Because they need to be fed more than once a day at this age you divide the total amount of food, 2% of their current weight, is what should be fed. Keep an eye on the stools to make sure the do not get to runny and most times they will but that should pass in about a week USUALLY. Good Luck to your friend it she chooses to go this route

We should double check that because I thought it was 2% of adult weight or 10% current weight..I could be worng - but I think I heard that somewheres.... I never fed a puppy raw so not sure.

I checked this out on the rawfeeding board. It is 2-3% of expected adult weight OR if the puppy is under 6 months you can go with 10% of current weight.

The breeder I know who is feeding raw started her litter of puppies on raw at 3 weeks of age! She first started with 50/50 goats milk/water, then added ground chicken with the bone. She feeds 2 days of this, (I don't remember how many meals) than 2 days of ground lamb, 2 days of beef, 2 days of rabbit etc. Of course, the pups are still nursing too.
By the time they go to their new homes at age 8-10 weeks, they will be eating the meat/bone and it will not be ground for them.

Leerburg has an article with a suggested raw diet for pups. You might not follow it meal for meal, but its a good general outline of what to aim for. leerburg.com/feedpups.htm
