Quick question.....
I have read conflicting reports on giving rawhide bones to puppies. Does anyone know if it's okay to give it to them?
Thanks!

You'll find the general consensus (particularly on this board ;D) saying a definite no. Rawhides pose a pretty good choking hazard, particularly when those sharp little puppy teeth can rip them into large chunks. There's also zero nutritional value to them as well. And if you knew what went into a rawhide, you'd never give one out again . It's basically rendered down offal, skin, and other various and sundry unusable parts of animals, made into a mash and dried out in various shapes. Yuck . Better choices are Kongs, Nylabones, and natural beef shin bones. Kongs and shin bones can be filled up with a vaiety of things (peanut butter, mashed banana, yogurt) and frozen, a great way to keep your pup occupied for a long time.

Personally I think the most disgusting ingredient in most rawhide is formaldehyde... AKA ...embalming fluid

I dunno. The clear, un-bleached, un-screwed with rawhide chips are probably fine if your pup isn't a hard chewer. Ripley was never able to rip off a piece of rawhide, instead he just shredded it and ingested the tiny shreds. His stomach can't handle the bleached kind, though.
Nylabones and Kongs, like Laura said, are better choices for a heavy-duty chewer. Not all dogs take to Kongs instantly, mine didn't like the smell, but if something yummy enough is put in there, they'll play with them eagerly.
