Hi all,
What's the best way to treat a doggy upset stomach?

This depends on if we are talking about constant upset due to the raw feeding (which might require modification of his menu or how you feed) or if we are just talking about occaisonal upset..and which "end" the upset is on....

...the occasional upset stomach resulting in vomiting and lack of action in the other end

Okay...if he pukes right after (or within a couple hours of eating) he probably ate too fast and just needs to re-ingest it (gross I know)...
If he is "empty" and therefore has nothing to come out the other end - then re-ingestion will take care of that problem. If he is constipated then a little extra meat especially organ meat will do the trick.
If his tummy is upset more than a couple hours after eating - then we need to try to figure out what triggers it...

Well it happened first thing in the morning. The day before he didn't go poopy at all and he had more to eat than usual since we had a family gathering and the little ones kept feeding him goodies. Im guessing this is what triggered the vomiting but I dont understand why he didn't take a dump.

You may possibly want to hold off on the bones for a few days. Also... what kind of goodies did you mean? That could have a lot to do with it too...

I didn't see what they were feeding him at all times but I saw pretzels, cooked sausages, and barbequed pork.
Do you think the bones are contributing somehow?

A diet with too much bone will produce dry sandy poop which can result in constipation. The best thing to do in this case is increase the meat to bone ratio - not get rid of bones.
Also - many hours after eating (like the next morning) the dog could throw up..usually it is mostly bile with a few little bone bits or twigs or leaves or other stuff that wansn't properly digested.
In this case -preventing the ingestion of unapproved stuff is helpful. Also it is possible that some bone is coming back up - not because the system can't handle bone - but because it can't handle that type/quantity of bone YET or because it can't handle bone plus a bunch of other crap.
This is gross and annoying yes - but not a cause for alarm. The system is doing exactly what it was meant to do - gettting rid of what it can't handle at the moment.
On the rawfeeding list they talk alot about this early morning bile-puke and the main hypothesis seems to be that this happens when dogs are fed on a strict schedule (the system is getting ready for the next feeding) and therefore varried feeding times/amounts along with the passage of time and the strenghtening of the digestive system eliminate the problem.
If this was a one time thing - I wouldn't worry too much about it...if it is happening with regularity then you will need to look at changing some things. There is no medicinal remedy I would really recommend for the occaisonal upset dog stomach. The one thing I do - is honor my dog's insticts...if he doesn't want to eat - I don't coax it I let him self fast and give his digestive system a break occaisonally.
