Can you feed them red meat? I read everything about the chicken and pork.
I gave them some red meat yesterday....I hope they will be ok.
Typical of me to do my reading after the fact!
I have been checking the yard for poop. I only found 1 big blob. oh no.

Yep...they can have red meat - mostly you just hear about chicken and pork because it's generally cheaper.
;D

The real "die hard" rawfeeder's feed as much of a variety as possible, from mice...yes, mice, to Ostrich, venison, rabbit, lamb etc., and as said before...the bigger the pieces, the better so they have to rip and tear at it, which cleans the teeth and exercises the jaw muscles, plus they are less apt to swallow large chunks and choke.

I am not an expert on this (actually far from it) but I always thought that the reason that dogs don't get the runs with raw (well one of the reasons) is that there is a mixture of meat and bone. That is why it is called BARF...*bones* and raw food. I don't think you can just feed the meat without the bone like you are doing and expect to not have the runs. You need the bone for a fiber type reaction as well as its other properties.
Hey you raw feeders. Am I right on this?

One other thing that I recall reading (from here actually) is that red meat is not a good choice to start with. It is very rich. Chicken (with the bone) is better if you are just introducing the raw food until the dog has a chance to get used to the raw diet. But don't worry, the dogs will be ok. Petey sometimes gets the runs after a beef marrow bone and then he is fine.

A sharp sudden change in diet will often cause upset, so better to ease into a new feeding routine slowly. You might also go easy on the yogurt until you're certain what caused the runs. Not all dogs tolerate cow's milk products well. When I do use it, I use plain/natural sheep or goats milk yougurt (no flavoring).

Nicki - sometimes the dogs get meaty bones and sometimes they get meaty-meat. meaty-meat poops are smaller and softer but if the dog has enough time to adjust to the diet they aren't projectile ;D
Boxerlover - I would encourage you to check out the rawfeeding forum - the link is in the upper right of the screen.

Update....Yes, both the chicken and the red meat had bones also. I have joined the rawfeeding list at Yahoo several months ago....I have read lots and lots. Nothing like taking the plunge full speed ahead huh? See what a couple of beers does to me while getting ready to go camping.... "Here puppy, want some raw chicken?" As far as the hamburger, rice, yogurt mixture... I read that is a very calming thing for a dogs tummy! It really did the trick Stools today were loose, but not runny....also very small. So I know they are going to be A.O.K.!

Great to hear things are going better with Raw and Nicki you were right about the proportion of meat and bone. The thing about cooked meat is that it is harder for the dog to digest it. Also when you cook hamburger especially the fat gets pushed into the meat and can cause the dog to get very runny stools even if you are feeding it with the rice. I never had a problem when I started Blade on raw, but I did not go cold turkey as most do I did it over a period of time with the kibble and then just went right to the raw. Yesterday was a raw day for him. He was SOOOOO happy Eventually he will be back on raw totaly because that is when he looks his best and also he does not shed half as much when on raw.
