Well I just called to get the final report on Petey's stool and was told that there were no parasites or worms but there was fatty mucous in the stool. I haven't spoke to the vet yet but was wondering if anyone knew what that meant. My preliminary research indicates that it could be worms, colitis, gastroenteritis, pancreas failure, bacterial overgrowth, cancer of the intestine etc. Yet, the girl told me it was normal and she DID NOT sound like she knew what she was talking about especially considering that Petey has been having loose stools. Has anyone ever heard of this??

Nicki - I am glad Petey did so well on his first visit! I wouldn't expect any less of one of your dogs though ;D Anyway - I only have a little experience with this mucosy stuff. My dog Mickey had a "nervous" tummy and would get diahreah when ever we would travel with him or leave him home with a sitter or change his diet or ANYTHING different - anyway usually right before the bout of diareah there would be a big mucosy elimination - that I could actually see.... I just associated it with the upset...my vet never commented on it after any stool tests - so I don't know...I don't think it was always there. He wasn't the healthiest critter though...so? ?? About Petey's loose stools though - be careful if/when you change foods - I learned on the rawfeeding list that alot of dry foods contain stool firming agents that don't really fix the underlying problem but mask it. Sorry - guess I am not much help!

Thanks Amyjo. You were actually more help than you think. ;D You reminded me that Reign had bloody mucus in his stool from stress when I boarded him. I didn't make the stress connection. And also now I realize that the puddles of glob that I would see around and on the stool was mucus. I thought it was anal sac fluid. So, this has been going on for awhile. The only thing that has changed is that I am working alot more than I expected. It was supposed to be part time until Sepember when I start school but it is ending up being more full time. I wonder if this is stressing him. He is free in the house with a dog door, no destruction but maybe the alone time is stressing him. So, I researched and decided to change his food to Canidae and went today and bought a bag. I haven't fed any yet and of course today for the first time in a while he had PERFECT poops. Isn't that always the way!! Now I don't know what to do.

I would check the ingrediants of the new bag - and see if there are any "fiming" agents in either - I don't know the names so I guess you would have to google anything you don't recognize and then if the stool stays firm - you know its for real. As for the mucous - I wouldn't go borrowing problems or paying for expensive tests - Personally I would opt for the wait and see approach.

The brand you bought Nicki should be just fine for him. If I am not mistaken the firming agents at least with this brand are just natural forms of fiber, I don't have my poison bag anymore so I can't check that for you. Blade has been doing really well on the Purina ONE Salmon formula, which is designated for sensitive stomachs. All the ingrediants are fine, and Salmon is the first one. If Petey does not do well with the Cainidae this one might be good to try. It is not uncommon for dogs to have mucous in their stool especially in summer. I know with hot tempatures (not something we see here in the ARTIC ) it can cause stools to be loose and slimey. Don't forget to still think about raw, I know that maybe you got scared because of what happened to Blade, but we are going to go back soon. I just liked the way he looked on raw much better than he does now, I mean he looks fine nice shiney coat, white teeth, bright eyes and odorless breath, but it's the muscle mass that I miss

My dogs used to get mucousy stools once in awhile when they were on kibble and then when I first switched to raw they had it a couple times, but their stool always stayed firm, no diarrhea with it, and then it went away for good! I always still check Kerra's stool after she goes...I bet she thinks I'm crazy...she poops, I go over and look at it! ;D

That is the true test of craziness. When Brian called me yesterday, the first thing I told him was that Petey's poops were good and then we discussed his poops for several minutes. :)He thinks I am crazy for sure. BTW, Petey had another really good poop last night.
