Sailor the double coat Shed-monster is having an off season coat blow, so in self defense I bought my first groomer quality undercoat rake.
I used it for about 5 minutes and it took so much fine white hair off I was starting to wonder if I would have a dog left if I used it too much. I'm used to taking bags full off, but this was an amazing amount
Assuming I groom once or twice a week, and use the rake prior to brushing her out normally with a medium brush, is there any danger I can actually remove too much undercoat?
Or will only loose hair come up and the rake is just much more efficient in dislodging it?

Did you get the rake with the rotating "teeth"? I bought one of those and hardly get any hair at all, but it goes through the long thick hair a lot easier than the regular ones. I'm used to getting bags full, too, as you said, but maybe Kerra isn't in *full shed* yet. If I remember right, my dogs always started in May. I always worried with the regular undercoat rake that I was removing too much of the undercoat, because even in off shedding season I would get so much hair, so I don't know, Aussienot. I'm in the same boat you are and wondering too, so I'm no help. What I CAN do though, is em the Aussie breeder and ask her about using the undercoat rakes/combs, because she shows and grooms her own dogs and they are just georgous!

Thanks. At least you reassured me that it's not a stupid question. ;D Sailor's coat is heavy but short, so I got the standard kind of fixed teeth rake.
I suppose I could ask some show people. I'd like to ask a professional groomer, but they'd have a vested interest in telling me not to do it myself.

Yes the rake will take alot of hair off I could have made another dog with what I get off of Blade. I should invest in one with the rotating teeth but I use the vacume attachment that I got from Fosters and Smith and I love it. Blade on the other hand has a different opinion but TOUGH I vacume first then I rake then vacume again and finish with the slicker. We do not have the little fluff balls floating around anymore and since I took him to the groomer this last time it made things soooooooo much better. The only part that is hard to shed on him is his haunches that always seems to be the worst.

I know what you mean about the haunches and the long hair on the back of her thighs, what some dog people call the *pants*. Kerra (and Pup did too) gets matted really quickly in that area. Also between their back legs! The swivel rake gets through that long hair really easily. I have tried the slicker brush and all I end up doing is pricking my fingers...OUCH!! And Kerra hates it worse than anything, so I also bought a good groomer quality pin brush for a zillion dollars!!! Duane made me a nice grooming table attached to the deck so I groom outside and put the hair in a plastic bag during shedding season. In the winter they don't lose much hair, even with brushing, so I just wad it up and throw it away and then vacuum up any loose hair after we are done.
