Ok I need some help here. Blade is due for his hearworm test and fecal exam in two weeks. My question is how do you get POOP when you feed a raw diet This dog does not eliminate large piles anymore and the ones that do come out are small and turn to powder and blow away. Before I could always time him I knew exactly when he had to take a dump and could easily get a sample BUT NOW

Can you keep him inside and go outside with him when he is outside for the day before the exam or the day of the exam until he has to go. How quickly does the poop turn to powder.

Sibemom - that cracks me up because I was just kind of wondering the same thing - I have the added complexity of trying to figure out which pile of poo powder belongs to which dog. I walk my dogs to the vet and I could always count on them eliminating on the way...they go somewhat infrequently now - so I will have to be the poop vulture on the morning of the apppointment ;D

I have to confess... I go out and step on it and just kick it away But anyway to answer your question about the sample - they should be able to do a test on even a small amout of the powdery stuff... When one of my dogs had Giardia - I had to pick it up with a teaspoon to get the sample - and it worked out fine.

They usually just stick this long plastic thingy up my dogs rears and get a fecal that way at our vet...not exactly the most inviting thing in the world to look forward to...

I have heard of this although my vet has never done it. I don't think my dog would lay still for it. It is a "fresher" and a more accurate sample. The sample that you take to the vet should be as fresh as possible and refrigerated until you get there. Otherwise the parasites will die and not show up on the microscope.

The last time I had my dogs done, the Vet (Dr. Voyle's, Ann), just used a swab and stuck it up their butt! It was no worse than having their temp. taken. Of course, this was before the rawfeeding, so I don't know if they would be able to get a good sample like this now, but I would think so. I would call and ask the vet if they could do it that way.
I'm glad I've never had to bring in a urine sample from Kerra! You have to follow them around and then try to slide a plastic plate or something under them when they start to go and I know Kerra would quit going and run away if I tried that!!!!
