Yep, that's it in a nutshell, kinda. That protein is a prion, which lives on the surface of cells, it becomes altered when infected, and prions aren't affected by heat (cooking). So as for the risk of a raw fed dog getting it, it's about the same as yours, about 1 in 2 million. What's a little worrisome is that they've found 9 different mutations of the vCJV prion in the last 16 months, that's very fast for a gene to facet .

Sure is scarey with all the *new* stuff coming out....like the bird flu. I read that it really started spreading to people when they quickly *invented* a vac's and started vaccinating the chickens to prevent it. Had something do with the vacc altering the virus, so it could then infect people. (You can tell I am no scientist!!! Sorry. )

I have a question about egg shells. I am finding them in small pieces in the feces...looking pretty much they way they did when they went in. Do they need to be ground to more of a powder in order to be utilized?

I don't think so, but I've heard of people taking the shells, letting them dry out, and pulverizing them to put them back into the food. I myself am a firm believer in if it comes back out pretty much the way it went in, then the body didn't really need it. Like taking too many vitamins, my dad says it just gives you really expensive pee ;D.

My daughter left her crayons out on the table once and Myah ate a few of them. Talk about tie dyed poo.
I have a question... Are there any smaller emial lists than the one you posted in the raw foods diet thread?? I subscribed to that list but the emails were insane. I had like 15 emails in an hour. I really want more information about this diet but I am not having much luck researching it. It seems to be everywhere but no one gives a specific diet.
Like for instance my puppy is 67 lbs... I want to figure out how many pounds of rbg per day and how much veggie mush. And off the veggie mush how much veggies and how much ground meat.
I also want to know if everything can be frozen.. like use frozen veggies and what not. Actually I guess I am wondering if I can perpare the mush, put it in containers and freeze it. Then just thaw and serve. I do that for my fish and it isn't too much of a P.I.T.A.

CRAYONS ARE SOOOOOOO COOL. They also add a certain color to not only POOP but toes, lips, etc... I think Blades favorite color is purple. I agree with if it comes out the way it went in why bother. I don't feed the organ meat anymore because he just would not eat them. Magda (our homeopath) said that if I just add cod liver oil to his diet I really dont need the organ meats. He takes the CLO much better than the salmon oil he picked at that but with this I just pop it in his mouth and POOF its down. Garlic on the other hand has to be covered in peanut butter. He is such a fussy eater.

And Ohclued1...notice I changed your name ;D I had the same experience getting 100 ems a day. So I just go to the board and read from there. It works pretty well.
Amy, how is the diet going? Anything new to report?

Well as far as the amount of mush and meat, when I was feeding mush he got about 1/3 to 1/2 cup of mush with 8oz of ground turkey. He now has decided also he doesnt like ground meat either. He likes meat on bone, and when I give the eggs with the shell it is mixed in his applesauce or his sardines packed in water. He still likes those thank god. I try to mix up the protein sources because its good to have a variety. If you join the rawfeeding list on yahoo you will learn alot. Don't listen to everything they have to say but pick and choose what is best for your dog and yourself.

With eggshell...put the egg w/shell into the blender so it is ground fine. Some say it's important to feed egg with the shell, other's say it's not necessary.
Sibemom is correct: Veg's are not needed. They are like grain and the body does not digest them, so if they are not ground up fine, they will come out undigested, plus, like grains, most dogs can be allergic to most veggies and can develop skin problems from them, so what I do is just offer mashed up cooked veggies when we have them left over from a meal a couple of times a week. If YOU don't eat veggie's, then you can't do this, I guess, ;D but my dogs diet is basically just the RMB's, every day, ( a variety of beef neck bones, pork neck bones, and if they don't have a lot of meat on them, I add pork and beef chunks to balance the meat and bone) chicken, *mostly hind quarters and breast meat with the ribs). Backs, necks, wings are too much bone, so when I feed these things, I add a drumstick or theigh for more meat too), Turkey drumsticks and venison when I have it, and several times a week ground turkey meals to which I add a whole egg. With organ meats, fish and eggs I basically just feed once or twice a week.
If you feed a lot of veg's, your dogs will poop more, like they do when fed grains. If their poop is dry/crumbly or they seem constipated, you are feeding too much bone and should just feed more meat.
Basically what you are going for is as large a variety of RMB's you can provide which will cover all their nutritional needs over time, not all at one meal.
....And...like Ann said....join the Raw feeding list. There are people there who have been feeding raw for 10+ years and pretty much know all the ins and outs!

Amy, how is the diet going? Anything new to report? Nope there is nothing new to report. What was once kind of foreign and scary has really just became a way of life. I am so happy with the way they look and smell that I am never going back to kibble. I had two bags on hand and donated them to a local shelter yesterday. I have to admit - I still worry a little that I might be "doing it wrong" but I just try to remember balance over time. Elvis will be going in to the vet in the next couple of months for his bi-anual bloodwork (twice a year now since the cancer) so I will ask about checking for any nutritional deficiencies at that time as well. I intend to assume if he is fine then Kylie is too.
