I have recently decided to switch to raw feeding. I am following the basic plain laid out by Loey in the raw feeding thread.
I prefer to feed my dogs once a day so my plan is a little different from Loey's. I plan to feed RMB 2 days and small RMB plus veggie mush on the third.
I started out with a single protein source as reccommended by sibemom. I fed chicken quarters for three days.
I have already begun to see changes in Kylie and Elvis' coats - they are sooo shiny. I am assuming it is the marrow in the bones and the fat in the chicken skin - but whatever it is I am verrry happy.
I am also noticing that Elvis' breath is MUCH improved so that makes me real happy too since he likes to sit in front of me and breath on me!

Today is the fourth day of the Raw diet and I have decided to start veggie mush... I used ground turkey, romaine, yams and apples and the dogs LOVED it! I also added eggs with shell and a tablespoon of yogurt. I was all set to write a glowing report when Elvis vommited in mass quantities by the front door. I half expected this because I read in some other accounts that this can sometimes happen when the dog first starts eating this way. Soooo... It was difficult but I walked away and let him eat it back up. ugh...now if you will excuse me, I need to go clean my floor

Might as well, can't hurt for them to have sloppy seconds, besides, that's how wolves feed their young .

Is the amount that you are giving exactly measured? I am talking about the ratio between meat and veggies? And on days that you give meat and bone, do you measure it?
Thanks for doing this Amyjo. It will be very helpful. Now I know that vomiting is to be expected.

No - I am not measuring anything and here is why I decided not to. Do you measure your own food? Do you eat an exact ratio every single day of all nutrients?
I have been surfing around and reading up on different diets and different experiences. The folks that seem to enjoy feeding this way the most are the ones who just relax and "do it"....
I think after years of watching pet food commercials we are conditioned to believe that if our dogs don't get all the correct nutrients every single day in exactly the right ratios they will drop dead on the spot.
I am not saying nutrition is not important for dogs - but rather just relax and have fun. I read this one woman's advise she said raw feeding for her consists mostly of opening the back door and flinging dead animal parts at her dogs ;D
The other piece of advise that I read - somewhere - was that we are not tying to achieve perfection in each meal but rather BALANCE OVER TIME. Which to me means if I am feeding a variety of meats with varying ratios of meat to bone and a variety of fruits and veggies I really can't go wrong.
To answer your question about the veggie mush - I started out with one pound of meat and ended up with three pounds of mush and my dogs ate it up like it was the best thing I ever gave 'em!
This morning I looked at my dogs and I know I said they were shiny yesterday - but today they are positively glowing if that is possible.
Elvis gave his daddy a "hug" today before work and he actually commented that his breath was much improved - which let me know that I am not on crack and these things are really happening.

I forgot to say I am a little concerned because Elvis didn't poop yesterday. So I am watching carefully today.

Amyjo, do you feed the ground meat/veggie mush and RMB's both at one meal? If so, that could be why Elvis tossed his cookies! It is not recommended on the rawfeeding list to do this, because they digest at different rates or something and can cause vomiting. So can overfeeding at a meal cause vomiting or regurgitation. My homeopath told me vomiting and regurgitation are two different things. Regurgitation is done shortly after eating, and usually caused by over feeding or the dog eating too fast. Vomiting is done two or more hours after eating and is usually a digestion problem. Yes, gross as it is, if they reguritate or vomit it's best to let them eat it if they will. Excuse me while I go vomit!

You are doing a great job at keeping track of how your progress is going. We here are still in veggie denial. Your right about exact portions they are not needed. Some days Blade gets a stuffed to the gills meal and others are lighter. I am lucky he has never vomited YUK! And if he did you bet I would let him eat it, The saying in this house is "You Made The Mess now you clean it up" ;D

Ann - on some website I browsed a woman said she had a similar problem. She solved it by giving veggie mush to the dog every day till he ate it. Then she went back to RMBs the next day. She said on the third day he happily ate his veggie mush and never turned his nose up at it again!

That is what I am thinking about doing. He was eating it just fine and then yesterday he looked at it and walked away. I even tried mixing some with his favorite SARDINES all he did was pick out the fishies and left the rest.
