My dogs are too wussy to be agressive , so this really is more of a general question..
Was thinking of an episode of Animal Cops I saw a while ago where they were behavior testing two dogs that had bitten someone on the street to see if they could be returned to their home. While doing the assessment, the behaviorist put the dogs on (what looked like) a standard 6' leash and had her assistant jog by. The one dog didn't even seem to acknowledge the jogger while the other tried to run up to her with the behaviorist then labeling that as "agressive chase behavior" and the dog was ordered to be put down.
Ok, so here's where my dogs come in... kinda. My dogs make it their sole purpose in life to make friends with *everyone* be it the pizza delivery guy or a bank robber (I joke that someone could break into my house and the two of them would say "Take whatever you want, just pet me first!" Good guard dogs, eh? At least they make a lot of noise ) Anyway, when I'm outside with them, they always want to run up to people on the street. I don't let them, but Karma especially has tried to run up to strangers... but it's not because she wants to attack... she wants to run up to them and sit in front of them with her head on their knee so they'll pet her.
So my curiousity is... how do they distinguish between an "agressive chase" and "I just want to make friends with the stranger"? From what they showed on tv (dog went to run up to the jogger and the behaviorist did a collar correction so the dog never actually got to the person) it didn't seem any different than what Karma likes to do. Maybe there was more to it that was edited out of the episode?
