Hello, new here, looking for some help. I looked through the training links and haven't really found what I'm looking for.
Moxon, 2.5 years old, German Shepher mix, 50 lbs, is my first dog, and as such I've made my mistakes, but all in all he's mostly more obedient than your average house dog. He has his issues with people coming in the house, reactive to other dogs when on leash, etc. These things I've addressed with my trainer and am continuiously working on.
One issue I'm not sure how to address is his behavior in dog parks. He's mostly a loner. We go to the off-leash park and play ball. He doesn't want much to do with the other dogs most of the time. Occassionally if a group of them are on a run-about he'll chase for a few seconds, barking, and then come back to me to play ball.
If a dog approaches him, he'll sniff them, and then suddenly do what *sounds* like an aggressive sort of "attack" only it's not really an attack, so much as a communication that I think is either a dominance move or I'm just a mean grumpy dog move. I'm not sure how to deal with this.
He plays fine with my parents' Bichon Frise, who he mostly likes to chase around, bark at, and chew on. He also did fine with a Great Pyrenese we used to live with, who was dominant.
I can't figure out if he's being protective of me, of the ball, or is having some other motivation. I'm not sure of the best way to correct/discipline the behavior, as I've been working hard on having him associate seeing other dogs as good things (per the leash walking problems).
The description I give of his behavior is pretty weak I realize, but it's hard to explain. It's not a real fight-starter, may be if another do decides to retaliate at some point. HELP!!!
