Raven has been yanking my chain for the past few days and it's not her fault, the problem is getting her out to get enough excersise. Well I think I figured out something that will help her and I quite a bit. Since it is not possiable to take the long walks that are required to fill the needs of a young VERY ACTIVE SHEPPY, I put the zip line up got out the remote controll car, that was always a favorite with my two and I let her rip, then after about a good 45 minutes of chase and NO CATCH it was off to the basement to do a good brisk walk on the treadmill for another 30 minutes ;D she is now passed out at my feet, THAT IS SO GOOD ;D The only problem I am having and of course any advice would be helpful is that she is blowing through her pinch collar, now I even went to the micro mini and still she is just WAY TO HYPED to respond, and I did try getting her energy level quelched before we start drilling and she still is not reponding to it. I had a similar problem with Willow but the Micro mini solved it, this one is SOOO STUBBORN you can definatly see the german side surfacing so I was thinking I might try the E Collar just to re enforce what I am trying to get across. This dog is VERY HIGH DRIVE OH MY GOD Great tempermant but WOW She needs no outside stimuli for motivation what so ever, she wants to work but it's trying to get her more focused and I know she is only going to be 7 months. So what do you think? I used the e collar on both Brody and Willow to proof a few things and only had to use the virbrate mode, THIS PUP I am for seeing at least a low level nick This pup could be the one that gets the best of me so any hints are greatly appreciated Oh yes and she gets spayed tomarrow WHOOPEEEE

I have remote cars too!! ;D What a blast for the dog.
I wanted to ask you about the treadmill. What kind are you using? I read something...I will try to find it if you want... that dogs should never be on a human treadmill. Evidently, it is extremely unnatural for them to walk the way a human treadmill forces them to and also it makes the heart rate go way too high. A dog should only be on a dog treadmill which is a treadmill that moves when the dog walks. Do you want me to find the article for you or are you using a dog treadmill?
What is it that you are trying to train that she is not responding to?

I can't remember where I got the information. But now after thinking about it, I remember that the issue with the human treadmill is that I THINK that if it is long enough it may be OK. The dogs natural stride is much longer than ours and so the mill has to be long enough to compensate for it. So I think as long as it isn't too short, you are OK. I am really not positive about all of this I just remember reading something that talked about it and how overworking a dog can produce blood in the urine and possibly damage organs (I expect that might happen if you left the dog on the treadmill while you went shopping ). Sorry for scaring you!! But I want you to know that this information is out there. Also, make sure you don't overwork her. Forced running or fast walking a 7month old for 20 solid minutes may be too long. She will keep running probably as long as you want so I wouldn't wait for her to tire. I would make the sessions much shorter especially while she is still a pup and growing. And don't forget to warm up and cool down. ;D OK, the exercise lesson is now concluded!! Good luck with Ravens spay today!!

Thanks for that info Nicki ;D Her time on the treadmill was more of a cool down and not a run more of a fast walk then slowed down to an easy stride and your right if the treadmill is not long enough it could pose a problem with the dogs natural stride ;D Now the problem that I have with her is not unusual it's just frustrating. You know how when you first start out with a pup, and you start the foundation for learning, well because I did not really start her Em and Luke did or I should say Em did, there are some behaviors that are a little hard to break, like constant JUMPING pulling through the pinch on a walk even with a very strong level of correction this pup has no CLUE what loose leash is disrespect for me and for any other adult who does try and ask for compliance but she will listen to Matt figure that out . Pretty much what I am dealing with is the spoiled child syndrome Getting her attention is a strech, and that's why I think the e collar is going to come in very handy. Like I said SHE KNOWS her comands it's more of an attitude of IF I FEEL LIKE IT I WILL DO IT AND IF I DON'T SCREW YOU part of this is her age she is young a so full of herself I just need to take her down a few pegs, and because like I said the pinch collar is doing NOTHING, which I find VERY STRANGE and the first time I have ever dealt with that, so I figure if I use the e collar starting on vibrate and if needed just going to a low level nick we might get a better response and then go back to the pinch. She just needs to learn who is in charge cause right now SHE THINKS SHE IS big mistake puppy girl I know even my vet said WOW she is really full of herself, and then he added SHE'S NOT PART HUSKY IS SHE I said NO he's such a joker The other thing I need to do is turn this HIGH DRIVE in a postive direction and I think I have something that might do it. As soon as she is healed from her spay we are going into intensive BITE WORK, and see if that does not redirect some of this ADHD See I go from having one sheppy with a confidence issue to haveing one that is TO CONFIDENT so I just have to find something to get her back on track with out loosing that SELF ASSURED NATURE because really it is GREAT to have that in her because she loves to work it's more the attitude of her only wanting to work on HER TERMS and that will change TRUST ME

One thing Finn taught me is that the impact of the correction changes depending on who gives it. When I was having problems between my two with fighting, while I was handling Sailor I saw the trainer almost take Finn's head off, and Finn basically ignored him, it did not stop him one bit. But when we changed dogs, only a slight correction from me brought Finn into line. Once Raven accepts that you are the leader of the pack, I think the issue will lessen if not completely disappear.
I don't think it will hurt to try the e-collar. She may or may not respect it but at least it's a different sort of stimulation. A shift in tactics might be just what she needs at this point, and as long as you use a collar with variable levels you should be able to find her working point without using it in an over aversive way. It would certainly be physically easier for you to give an effective correction without excess effort.
Of course, you can't just put in on and start working. You need to teach her what the collar means, and how to turn it off, which I know you know, but just putting this in here for new trainers that might read this. An e-collar does not make a remote control dog. I wish it did!

THANKS AUSSIE Yes this little girl is a WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL GAME but you know since she came home from her spay, she was pretty mellow, and I thought that was only going to last just a day or so, but she is continuing to be very different and a bit more in tune to what I am asking her. Of course we did not do any drilling untill yesterday, I gave a her two day break but then yesterday we did some easy stuff, nothing to strenuous, and you know she responded ALOT BETTER Here is what I am wondering and I might be way off, but here goes. Raven had already gone into her first heat at 5 1/2 months, so I wonder IF because she had reached her sexual maturity if that did not play a major role in her attitude I know that you would'nt think that in a couple days after her spay would make such a difference but IT HAS I am not acting any different or doing anything different it's the same as I was doing all along except now it seems to MEAN SOMETHING E Collar I still do believe is going to be a great thing for her and like I said the bite work will be good to because of her EXTREME DRIVE, so I will just have to see where we go from here ;D It should be fun and BOY IS THAT SON OF MINE BETTER APPRECIATE IT I know he does OH and guess what He is going to be coming to "THE LAND DOWN UNDER" next month to see a girl that he met the first time he was in Australia at an air show, so I told him to just yell really loud "MY MOM SAYS HI LINDA"
