Well hello everyone, I've been trying to train my dog to speak for about a year now with no results!
I've read a bunch of guides that say try to make him frustrated, keeping treats away from him, making him jealous, and going out and giving him the command then reward if i hear him barking.
My problem is my dog is a big ol sissy and doesn't bark at ANY of my friends that come over, and he doesn't get frustrated to the point where he will bark for a treat or toy!
He does bark at the neighbors and anytime I hear him do it I run out there with one of his favorite treats, a piece of hotdog, and say say "SPeak", he comes to me and stops barking, I give him the treat and say "Good Speak" and keep praising him but still after a year he's not speaking on command.
I've taught him other commands, just the basics. Any suggestions?

Silly suggestion coming up - have you tried barking at your dog? I have a friend who swears this worked for him when he was teaching his dog to speak. I haven't tried it myself!

Be careful what you wish for!!! I taught my dog to speak in an odd way I guess...quite by accident... by teaching him to sing with me. We started with happy birthday and now he barks and howls in tune I might add anytime my husband or I sings. You have to get that first bark out and instantly and I mean instantly praise. Running out after the fact with a hot dog is too late. What we did is we sang very loud (me and my husband) and danced around all excited and the dog got excited and barked and we got all excited and praised and it just took off from there. Now sometimes just for fun I crank up the stereo and we all sing. It is exhausting for Sunny. If I want him to speak...I just say Happy Birthday to you. Of course it is critical to teach enough if you do this. I would not teach this is the context of encouraging him to bark at your neighbor because then he is going to think you want him to bark at your neighbor. It is a question of finding something that excites your dog enough to let out a bark and instantly praising. Let me also caution that my dog has become very vocal since we taught him this...he noises good morning to us, if I sing good morning to him and will just talk away with all kinds of noises because we thought is was so cute and encouraged it. Of course to an unknowing person it sounds like he is growling but he just chatters away with us. If I say How was your day, he will talk to me. I think it is adorable. Then I will say "and then what did you do" and he will talk again because we encouraged that. Getting it to happen and timing is the key.
