Hi everyone,
Glad I found this place, maybe you guys can help me out...
First of all, a little background: My wife got me a Siberian Husky puppy (which I named Tikanni) for Christmas. I have never, and never intended to, pay MONEY for a dog (we get so many strays out here in the country), but I had wanted a Husky or Malamute all of my life. Two weeks later, Tikanni disappeared, and we still have no idea what happened to him (if you're interested, I wrote a sort of poem after Tikki disappeared: wallencreek.com/blog/?p=37)
My wife made up flyers with our phone number, but we didn't have any calls for several weeks. One day, we got a couple of calls, but they turned out to be about an adult dog. To make a long story short, we ended up taking in an adult stray husky. To make a long story long, you can read about it here: wallencreek.com/blog/?p=39
and here

At any rate, here's my problem: Sitka is PERFECT, as far as i'm concerned, except he runs away He doesn't only run away, he comes back and taunts, then runs away again You simply can NOT catch him if he thinks you're trying to. As you will have seen if you visited my blog, He does seem to respond to being ignored. In fact, just this weekend I let him go. He ran all over, visited the neighbors yards, and kept coming back to tease me. Finally, I was by the house, and he was standing by the mailbox. We looked at each other, and he seemed to be saying, "Come on! Try and catch me! hahaha!". I turned my back on him, acted like I was doing something in the bed of my truck, then opened the passenger door. Sitka came running immediately, and jumped in the cab
So, I think Sitka likes it here, and won't run off permanently, but I'd REALLY like for him to come when called. I have worked with him some on a long leash, and he responds very well. But when he knows he's free, he intends to stay that way! At first, he would stay in the yard, but he discovered that the paltry 4 foot fence we have is no barrier to him!
I am a fairly accomplished horse trainer, but don't have any real experience with training dogs. Sitka seems to be housebroken (I've taken him to the office with me a couple times, no trouble at all), and he's great with kids. I don't know how hold he is, but I'd guess not much over a year. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
TIA,
