On a whim last week I called, just to see what they had to offer, what type of training they have etc., and today a representative (she was not a trainer as she kept telling me), called. I won't (for once) ;D go into the whole conversation I had with her, but the type of training they offer is " different methods of motivational training." I asked: "You mean like Clicker training?" She said yes. I asked if they use corrections. She said they do but only (should have written it down) "something, something and humane corrections". I asked like for instance? She said, "Oh, we use completely ignoring the behavior, or in some cases we will squirt the dog in the face with a squirt bottle. For good behavior we use food treats, toys etc. as a reward. She said they never use the "old outdated method of using choke collars or the other really inhumane prong collar." By then I was pretty hot under the collar and trying hard to keep my cool, so I asked what they recommend for large out of control dogs, and she said, "sometimes we use a GL." That's when I ended the conversation by saying, "Well...to each his own, I guess, but this would not be something I would be interested in." I wanted to end the conversation so badly before I said something I would be sorry for that I forgot to ask what they charge.

It doesn't matter about the price Willow, you wouldn't have gone there anyway. Sounds just like all the other training facilities around. The fad of the month sort of trainings. I like to say that I do most of my training at home and only need pointers on how to go about acheiving my goal regarding a certain behavior. You and your board have made me realize that one can use all forms of training and succeed. Those who close their minds to such training techniques do themselves and their dogs a disfavor.

Yes, you're right about places like that and that I wouldn't go to one like that. I also don't remember exactly how many weeks the course was, but the first 6 weeks of training were in home by correspondence and then you went to work under a trainer for the rest of the time, and IMO I think you learn more working with a good trainer and having hands on the whole time. Guess I should have paid more attention, but when she told me the method (only one) that they use etc., I kind of tuned her out.
