Hi folks,
Well, in just a half hour ago, (it is now 7:50am) Ringo and I just came in from a horrible experience.
I took him for a walk and on our way back, we were approaching an intersection with a traffic light. We were about 20yards ( I think) from the light and there was a pickup truck w/ a cab in the back that stopped (he was across the street from where we were) coz they had the red light. AND of course, in the cab were 2 , larger than Ringo, black/white dogs (they looked like Great Danes-not sure), barking at Ringo. When I heard them bark, I looked up and saw them, and in a quarter of a second, I realized the window was rolled ALL THE WAY DOWN (it's about 48degrees and sunny here) AND ONE of THESE LOUD DOGS JUMPED OUT..mind you the pick up was a high one, like a Dodge Durango...AND one can only imagine how I felt in those 2 seconds with this FREAKIN' SCARY dog CHARGING, BARKING AT us in a speed of light!!!! So my poor Ringo (all 75 lbs of him) started barking at this dog (I've seen bigger danes but this one was a bit smaller, but still bigger than Ringo...maybe it's not a g dane..similar looking..) tries to avoid him, goes around me while I try to keep him by me, while I kept on YELLING NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO at this dog with a hint of fear (for my life and Ringo's) in my voice. I actually felt the dog hitting me with his body (he didn't bite me) while he was trying to get at Ringo, growling, barking..I thought he bit Ringo coz I saw his mouth near Ringo's body and I thought I heard Ringo wimper. I am not sure because in those 5 seconds of panic, I was so out of focus, inexperienced, just plain freakin' scared!!!! By this time, the driver came to hold the dog back, scolded him (the bad dog) and he apologized (he said the dogs were foster dogs--I said: I don't care just keep them IN YOUR CAR WITH THE WINDOW ROLLED HIGHER!!) and made sure we were ok; in the meantime, another man stopped and checked if I and Ringo were ok, and then scolded him (the man with the bad dog) and advised him to tell the foster agency that the bad dog attacked Ringo (guess he witnessed the whole thing). The bad man with the bad dog was very apologetic and he also said sorry to Ringo, petted him and then the bad dog (I guess in a dog world) apologized by sniffing his balls (oops..is that allowed) ...was that an apologetic behavior? By this time, Ringo and master were both shaking and the whole neighborhood saw this incident because they backed up traffic by now. Good thing I was wearing a hat and no one saw my bed hair !
I think this incident made me realize that Ringo is more precious to me than I thought. So, to make us both feel better, I played with him longer than usual when we came home..so now I'm late for work.
My question: in situations like that, how can I handle this better...remember, I am a petite (old) lady..112lbs, 4'11"...and a first time dog owner.
Oops, sorry, I forgot to mention...I think Ringo's ok...if he isn't limping or licking any part of his body, and no visible bloody parts and even when I check his whole body without him pulling away...I guess he's ok. right?
well..gotta go...time to light up the candles, put on some Enigma music, soak in the tub and float away..wish someone could give me a massage to soften these muscles and put this memory behind me!
