There was a question on another board about what colors to use for taping stripes on agility equipment. One of the replies posted a link to a very interesting article about dog vision. This is how dogs see color compared to humans. If you want to see the article, the link is www.uwsp.edu/psych/dog/LA/davis2.htmAnd the answer is blue and yellow, but apparently yellow tape fades easily in sunlight.

That is very interesting. I knew that dogs saw color differently but I didn't realize it was so limited. They can't see green at all. A forest looks white to them. I wonder if this was so they could see their prey better.

I guess I should have read the article first. They have limited color perception but greater night vision to aid in seeing prey at night. Very interesting.

I had learned before that dogs see muted colors compared to humans (more cones than a cat, but fewer than a human), but I didn't realise that they don't have red in the spectrum at all.
I was surprised to learn that black and white is not the answer for visibility, as was shown in the article that black and white patterns can blur.

I saw the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company, not the american commercial network) program last year. It was fascinating to learn that different breeds have different fields of vision based on what they were breed to do.
Basically working breeds have a narrow band of vision, but equally clear vision for almost 180 degrees. Useful for hunting and herding.
Breeds developed only for companionship can see a clear circle directly in front of their eyes (to focus on faces) but everything outside that central circle is blurry. These are the dogs that will sometimes watch tv, because they can.
