I got a call today from a lady at our local animal control who reviewed my volunteer application. It was kind of interesting talking to her.
She said that they do a background check of course and a drug test...no problem there. I think she said they do a credit check which seems a little weird to me for a volunteer position? I'm not quite understanding that. I don't have anything to be worried about there but it just seems kinda strange to me.
She started asking what kind of work I was looking for. I told her I'd like to get into working with the dogs more and to sharpen my training skills and experience hopefully. She liked that but she said they don't do obedience training, which didn't surprise me at all. I told her about my experience with Peeka's aggression and she liked that I had experience with that.
She said that they adopt out ALL of their dogs...which kind of struck me a little odd. I think I'm going to pick at that a little and find out what they do with the aggressive dogs.
She said that most of their dogs are only there for a couple of weeks. They work to get their original owners to keep them and try to work out the behavioral issues so that the owners will keep them. I asked about their euthanization rate and she said "we don't euthanize dogs here at all, I do want you to understand that."
I'm just shocked. This place has been open for years. For a shelter it seems kind of odd to me that she would be so against euthanization. I asked more about the training styles they do and she said they go with head harnesses and halti's... I'm starting to wonder if this is such a good idea now. Although it will be experience...
I'm supposed to meet with her Monday.
