Some of you may remember the story about Blade, the Sibe in my signature, who was our $4000. baby who managed to survive Leptosprirosis (and for those who don't, 9 dogs caught Lepto at the boarding kennel we used at the time, Blade was our only survivor, this was about 20 months ago). Well he hasn't been doing well, for the past several weeks, he has been lethargic, not eating well (not even people food has piqued his interest this week ) losing weight and color hasn't been to hot. My father (who adopted him after fostering ) had taken him to his vet to be checked out, and the vet at this clinic is still a little green. So off to the rescue vet I take him. Here's the kicker. Full CBC, tick titers, platelet counts, T-cells, NORMAL. Clumping a little spotty on the platelets, but nothing to set off alarms. Stool and urinalysis perfect. Finally had them take x-rays, all clean. He has now lost 3 more pounds, a total of 9 in 4 weeks. I am absolutely beside myself trying to figure out what is wrong with this dog and dammit, it's not fair that he has to go through this twice in his short life. Tommorrow he's going back to the internist/specialist that saved him the first time, keep your fingers crossed that he can pick up whatever it is that's making this poor beautiful boy sick .

I hope the internist can find whats causing the problems Blade is having...you're right, he doesn't deserve to be this sick twice in a short life...

A friend of mine has a little beagle with health problems that sound similar to Blade. He recently became very ill, they have spent several trips to the vets office, specialists.. the whole nine yards. They recently discovered that a local health food store called Sprouts carried a hollistic (no addatives, organically grown products) brand of dog kibble. They put Cubby on this food and he has experienced none of his "typical" symptoms. He is very alert and healthy. There is a Sprouts nearby, when I get a chance I will go get more information and post. Sending light to Blade that he has a speedy recovery.

Ok, here's the news, and it's fairly good . Two days in the hospital and ($1200. later ), Dr. Berg (my fabulous internist/canine neurologist) has diagnosed Blade with what looks like doggie Lupus, or Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA). The white cell count was low after all, so he did run a bone aspiration on him to definitely rule out cancer, but it came back with a 98% negative. Blade was put on Prednisone, and so far it's working beautifully, his appetite has come back and he's even a little frisky again ;D. Yaayyyy!!!! And thanks to all for thinking positive thoughts for us, he's a very special Sibe to me, and he says Thank Woooo too!

That poor dog! Geesh... Well it's good that he's gonna be alright at least. I know Lupus SUCKS. Thats what they've thought I had for a couple years and keep testing me for.

Sigh, now that my head's in a better place, this is the deal. You know we thought that this was an autoimmune problem, so he's been on Prednisone for a while. Well, we can't keep him on it for long so we started cutting him back, he's do worse, we'd put him back on it, etc, etc, etc. Finally my dad called me on Tuesday, that Blade wasn't breathing well, and was having problems getting up, so I ran over to his house to see. Sure enough, he was incredibly bloated, panting, and was wobbly, so I ran him into NY to the specialist. I really thought that they could get him back on track, so you can imagine my shock when my phone rang yesterday morning, and it was the hospital telling me that he died. And not only that he didn't make it, but, and I quote, "riddled with CANCER". Now that I'm calmer today, I'm PISSED. How in gods name did they miss it? He's had test after test after test, when they did an ultrasound on him finally, they said they found two masses in the stomach . They weren't there 4 months ago, so heaven only knows what triggered the growth. All of this doesn't matter, because it won't bring him back, and my heart still aches .
