I have short pile gray carpet in my house, and while I like the softness and color of it, even with high maintenance it is constantly covered in fur.
With two long hair cats, a Labrador and a German Shepherd type dog, I do not stand a chance of keeping it hair free. Even if I vacuumed every day here at the Ministry of Fur (as if that would happen!), I would still have a veil of fine white hair covering the floor the minute I stop vacuuming.
I know hardwood floors are out. I like them a lot, but with the dog nails scratches are inevitable.
So, what is the best flooring for pets? Tile is one option. OK for the living room, hallways and kitchen, but I have trouble visualising it for the bedrooms.
Linoleum is what my brother recommends, but lino is a bit too cheap and cheerful for my taste. Concrete is too post modern for my federation style of home, and might hurt resell value.
Ideas?

Ministry of Fur....yeah, I can identify with that one!! As for what we have here at Casa Del Sheppy, it's a bit of a mix: Upstairs we have hardwood floors. There used to be carpet but, like your previous owners, the previous owners here felt that dogs peeing on the carpet was ok too - the smell was just a minor irritant. We had the house for 24 hours and every strip of carpet was ripped out of the hallway and 4 bedrooms as their 2 dogs felt that every square foot of carpet was an optional peeing spot!! We refinished the floors ourselves but you can see the main traffic areas of Rocky and Nikki - those darn nails!! As for the main floor, through the hallway and kitchen area, we have a laminate floor there. This was put in by the previous owners and for the last 4 years that we've owned this house, I've not seen 1 scratch in it from the K9 unit who've ran, skidded and jumped on it thousands of times. Considering it's a main traffic area, we're very impressed. The livingroom is stained hardwood and you can see the traffic patterns from Rocky and Nikki in some places. Downstairs we have carpet and that is just a fur magnet plain and simple. But it's cozy under the feet and that is what counts on a cold winters night. In the end, I think laminate is a good deal and depending on how your budget looks, you can get some really nice stuff at a great price. They have so many different styles and varieties (either wood grain or patterned like we have here) now, you should be able to find something that will fit with the decor in your house. It has stood the test of time here so far.

I have wanted to get laminate flooring for years now. I hate carpet, aside from hair sticking to it like velcro, it is a magnet for allergens, and there is no way to disinfect it.
My hubby is just now seeing my side, but we want to move to the country, so I might as well put up with the carpet for a few more years.

Laminate wood is a good option. You get the look of wood but it doesn't scratch. I remember in North Carolina though we had half our house un-carpeted and I hated it with two dogs. I would sweep and sweep and sweep and it just always felt like there was dirt and hair on it if you were barefoot. Even if you mopped after about half the day of the dogs walking on it it felt like there was dirt on it. It just never felt clean. Makes you realize what's in the carpet but it gets pretty cold here in the winter and it helps keep the house warmer.
